This depends on how much data is on the hard drive.
The inteneded design of a USB portable hard drive was to act as a portable & removeable backup for a main system.
Unless you have another hard drive or an abundance of DVD+R's, you may have to re-evaluate your options.

I do not want to restore a backup, I want to read files from the backup files

Typically back-up files made by back-up programs are encoded, and depending on which back-up software this may or may or may not allow you to access the backed-up files individually. How you access your backed up files will also depend on the back-up software you use.

For HP's back-up utility, "to recover a deleted file, simply use the Restore Wizard" - be careful not to recover the file on top of the current version of that file though.
http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/312352-0-0-225-121.html
see also the instructions (manual) for this utility
http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01824301.pdf

This procedure should work for any back-up software.Copy your back-up. Restore your back-up to a new location. Access the files you want from the restored back-up. Now you have access to the files in the back-up as they were when they were made, while still retaining your back-up and your current files. Be careful not to confuse 'old' for 'new' and 'copy' for 'original'.

Can I recover files that were deleted from my hard drive of an Everio MG360 camcorder?

YES. You have chance to get those deleted files back provided not overwritten.
First things first: DO NOT take any more videos or pictures with the camcorder(memory card) that you want to recover files from in case you may quite possibly ruin the chances.

Then take the memory card or hard drive out of your cam, and connect it to your computer as it should appear as a "Removable Drive" or put the card in a card reader attached to your PC.

Then install this software Wondershare Photo Recovery (recover videos and audio files too) on your computer. Then start to scan and see if your deleted files can be got back. Get the program from:

For Windows Version
For Mac version

Remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your camcoder(card or disk) until you can recover your files safely!
I hope you good luck!

You may try some recovery software to rescue the voice files on your recorder, here are some for your option.

Photo Video Audio Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Video Audio Recovery for Mac

Both programs can also recover video and audio items.

Note: Before your files are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the voice recorder in case the original files(your recordings) are overwritten.

Computer tells me "WDDM service not running"

If you want to back up files on to your external hard drive, you don't need the wddm program. Microsoft Windows usualy comes with a back up program. just open up the windows help and search for back up. and open the back up your files option and then click the link that says click to open backup and restore center. Follow the on screen instrucions and save the files to your external drive. I have an external drive, and I recomend that you do not back up yor files. This is only usefull for saved games. backing up music and movies takes to long. What I do is move all of my music and video files over to the external drive and I can acess them drictly from the drive itself. you can't do that if you back the files up, the files end up being commpressed into a zip file of some sort that says backup drive. when I installed my external drive, it was given a drive letter. I open up my computer and itsays My Book - with drive letter G. I click on it like it is a regular drive and I can save stuff to it. I save my videos to this drive and can watch them at any time. If you want to back up files I recomend unchecking the back up music and video options and saving music and vide files in the manor that I mentioned earlier. Then back up all other files and it will get done much quicker as these files usually are not near as big as music and video files are. So you can ignore the error message and be carefull not to download any updates for these drives. I did this and the drive came up with an error message that told me that my new drive was defective and needed to be replaced. I was angry so I took it back to the store, and replaced the broken drive for the same one. I will never again install any updates for my external hard drive. the error message said something about having no drivers, but the help info for the drive said that the drivers are automatically installed for all windows opperating machines. once again I urge all people with the western digital My Book essential and simmilar drives - stay away from those bad update files!

I am trying to copy files on to a flash drive or recordable CD to back them up but I can't because I can't drag my files at all

Sometimes you can't drag files for back up due to software limitations. Try to start your back up program first and then highlight the files you want to back up.

Select the files by highlighting them and right click for a drop down menu. If there is no option given to send to back up, your program may not support drag and drop.

Backing up files is not the same as saving them. Be careful, because you need the back up program to open them again.

If you only want to save your files rather than back them up, do this:

Highlight the files. Right click on the files you have highlighted. Make sure your cursor is right on top of the highlighted files. right click and on the drop down menu choose -send to-.The menu will give options. One of the options is send to compressed folder. This also saves space and is easy to open.

Of course, there are a variety of ways to approach this task, but this is the easiest.

An actual backup program compresses and backups your files and you need tags to access them in the future. In this case, the program simply may not support drag and drop.

Thanks for the question, please comment with the exact backup program you wish to use and we can help you with that if this solution was unacceptable.

Can I recover deleted files from the reader

Yes,
I think u can...
But only till u don't write any other files onto the card after deleting the files.

i.e. don't write any other file on the memory from which u delete the files until u recover them, else the recovery won't be that effective

PAGING FILE ERROR ON HARD DISK DRIVE

You don't install backup files; they're just files.

What you want to do is back up files to a portable hard drive. Then you want to find the backup files on your D drive and delete them.

The biggest commonly available flash drive is 8gb. That's enough to back up your word processing documents and such, but not enough to back up your entire computer. It's may not even be enough room to back up just your music files.

A 1tb external hard drive runs less than $150 now, mail order, delivered.
