There is a good chance that the error you received was because that one RAM stick went bad. You can buy one more stick of 256MB of RAM and insert it into the empty slot.
This has to be checked with existing ram in your note book, The same type may be added to make it 512 MB or can be replaced with a new with Higher capacity. The speed should match with existing Ram Chip Module.
