Are you sure you got the wires back on tight? Also it sounds like the bendex is not kicking out like it is supose to.....Did you change the starter cylenoied?

even some new starters are bad, it doesent happen much but it does happen. You might even take the starter back out and run Jumper cables to the starter. See if the bendex will kick out and stay out untial you diconect the starter......Sorry for your run of bad luck and I hope this is of some help.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

Really sounds like the battery terminals need cleaned.
If it will jump then your new battery is not connected.

Starter won't engage

check your flywheel & starter, one or both will be missing teeth, or the starter isn't "throwing out" yo engage flywheel

Nissan pathfinder 1995 model SUV, when i try to start it its making a whinning noise then i hear a hard clucking sound and the whinning goes away without the car starting

Does the engine crank at all ?
The low whine could be the starter turning but not engaging the flywheel.
The clunk could be when the bendix gear on the starter makes contact with the flywheel.
If the starter does not have enough voltage, the solenoid or bendix may not engage. Even tho you replaced both the starter and battery, there could be a problem with the cables or the ground connection.

Hi my 2006 Jeep Liberty won't start or turn over all keep hearing is this click sound when I turn the ignition , Plus I just replaced the battery .

Probably a starter. It sounds like the starter solenoid is working, but the starter motor is not energizing.

You could try this simple trick, but Im about 85% sure you have a bad starter.

Have a buddy help you push the vehicle in neutral for a short distance. When you get it moving at a walking pace, put the transmission in Drive, and let the vehicle come to a stop. You may hear a little clicking, but thats OK, it wont hurt anything. Put the transmission back in Park and try to start the engine again. Sometimes the starter gear gets stuck on the flywheel and it wont engage when you try to start the engine. This trick may move the flywheel a little so the starter can engage.

I replaced the distributor on my 1999 mercury villager distributor and now it turns over once and then the starter whines. What's the problem? Would it still turn over if the time was off?

Ok, first thing... Always start with a strong battery! (This is a good time to make sure your battery cables are good. Both ends!)Get it out and have it load tested. There is a tremendous strain on it when starting. I find it unlikely (but possible) that your car ran while it was out of time and that's easy enough to check so prob. worth a quick look and you won't even get too dirty! The thing is, when a car's timing is off, its a common thing for the starter to do exactly what you're experiencing. They "kick" back because the engine's spark is now fighting its mechanical design. Starters have a bendix drive. That's the part that pops forward and spins the flywheel, flexplate etc... They are designed to engage in only one direction so that as the engine fires and rpms go up, the starter, while still engaged in the flywheel's teeth, can spin freely and not cause mass destruction as a "locked gear" would. When this bendix goes bad, it will slip. This causes a slow or only a weak attempt (few seconds of cranking) and then makes an ugly whining noise. So unfortunately, I don't have a magic answer and without being there to see and hear more, battery, cables, firing order/double check distributor orientation, starter... Conveniently for you, in order of cleanliness! :) please let me know what you find, how you make out and if you've got more questions! Thanks and good luck!

My car is not ingaging to turn over

If it is just clicking, then the battery is too weak. Charge the battery or jumpstart.

If the battery is full charged and when you turn the key, the starter is just clicking again, possibly bad starter or bad battery cable ground. Check your grounds from the battery.

If it is a new starter and it is clicking like it won't engage, then it is not shimmed properly.

If you figure out what is wrong and need further help, please reply to this post with your questions.

Thanks! Oh, please post your engine size, year of car or truck and model. This helps A LOT!!!

1995 Dodge Ram 1500 starter

You said it's a new start that was tested thoroughly, but just wanted to point out that if the drive mechanism is damaged or hung up, the motor may spin but not crank the engine. The drive gear should move out when the starter starts to spin, if it's locked up or turns freely either way, the drive is bad and needs to be replaced.

The other possibility is that the flywheel has some broken or damaged teeth that are preventing the starter from engaging. It may sound far fetched but there are really only a couple of reasons why the flywheel wouldn't be spinning, as a starter has a LOT of torque and shouldn't have any problem at all moving the flywheel.
