I have exactly the same problem - it's says 'Memory Card Locked', but the same memory card will work fine in my dad's camera. Strange - and very frustrating!

memory card says locked, but not in lock position. tried new memory card and said it was locket too

  • andrew_graha Feb 22, 2009

Mine does the same thing -- reports the memory card as locked when it isn't. I didn't drop the camera or anything.

    I'm guessing the camera's rubbish.

Purchased a Casio EX-Z80 camera Dec 2008. Worked fine until 2-21-09. Now has same problem as described by other folks on this chat page. Display says "THE CARD IS LOCKED". The problem is not with the card (not slide lock in wrong position). Have same problem even when a known good card is installed. With a bright light I can clearly see inside the memory card compartment of the camera. The micro switch arm (which detects the position of the card's slide lock) seems fine and rocks, as it should when poked with a hairpin. Seems that Casio has a big problem with this camera. I'm hesitant to return the camera for repair as I'm sure the replacement will have the same problem. Remember how simple life was before electronic junk?

We have the same card is locked problem. The camera has not been dropped. It worked fine until one day it didn't. We bought a new card and the same thing happens. We have made sure the card is unlocked. How can this problem be fixed without sending the camera away.

Now for the latest and greatest regarding "locked card" problem on my EX-Z80A camera.

I sent the camera back to Casio repair center in Dover, NJ. fully expecting to never see it again for one reason or another. I used the on-line repair site to print out the return shipping label and service-request form. Casio was very good at sending a prompt e-mail acknowledgement of receipt of the camera. It's now 7 days after sending the camera to Dover and I just recieved it back (and I mailed it the cheapest way possible via USPS). All is now well as the "locked card" problem is no more. I must say Casio did a nice job paying attention to even small details. For example, I had a sticky back name/address label on the side of the camera and they neatly removed it (probably had to in order to access the camera guts) then stuck it onto the side of the bubble wrap bag. Oh yes, lest I should forget an important detail; since the camera was well within the 1 year warranty date there was no charge to fix it nor was there any return shipping charge. The packing slip was not very forthcoming with information describing what the fix was but that's OK as long as it continues to work. Casio has retained a long term customer with their prompt and quality service. I'll keep this FixYa web site posted if the problem should suddenly happen againt in the future. . . . .

Hi, I have the same problem with my casio exilim z80. I've tried with all kind of sd cards, used, new, locked, unlocked... and still the same message... If I remove the memory card, I can take pictures but only with the internal memory. Have you found a way to fix it without sending it to CASIO?

I have exactly the same problem with my camera, admittedly it did get dropped on the floor. There is no other damage to it but now cannot use it as the camera says the card is locked.....I have tried a new sim card and also locking and unlocking the card but this does not work either.

Any ideas would be gratefully recieved as the camera is only two weeks old!

I left my nikon D3100 outside with the tripod and i forgot to get it,then suddenly it got wet from the rain, what will i do?

Remove the battery imediately, the memory card and the lens. Place the camera body, lens and memory card in a warm dry and place for several days to dry out completely.
When the camers is dry, insert the battery, lens and memory card, turn on the camers and set the date and time.
If the camers does not work charge the battery and try again.
If it still does not work then you need to send it to the Nikon service centre for repair.

OK, if the memory card itself is locked, you might sometimes get this error code. All you need to do is to take out the memory card and switch the lever on the left side to the unlock.

If the error is still displayed after you did the above, you might want to try the card in another camera.

If the card works in another camera . the problem is with your card reader in your camera.

If you open you sd slot and look inside with a sharp light , you should be able to see on the left side of the slot there is a little copper or spring steel lever switch. This switch work as follows:

1. When no card is inserted / no write protection , the switch is open and thus the protection is off.
2. When locked card is inserted , the tab is depressed and tells the camera that the card is lock.

Contrary to popular belief ,the little tab on the sd card is not an electronic switch and does not physically influence the card operation itself. If you put a locked card into a camera without a sd lock switch , you would still be able to use the card normally.

It is incredible difficult to fix this switch because of space limitations in the sd card. Look into the sd slot and if you can see the switch , use a needle to pull the little tab down toward the base of the camera by about 2mm or until it works being careful not to bend it.

If this does not resolve your problem , there might be a short in the switch circuit and the camera will need to be disassembled to resolve this error. This should cost no more than $50.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further information

Kind regards

My PowerShot SD600 Digital Elph camers has taken lots of pictures. But, today when I turn it on, it says card locked! Any ideas on how to unlock this?

Remove the SD card from the camera. Slide the tiny switch on the side of the card to its other "unlocked" position. Reinsert the card in the camera. But if you've already tried this, see this link for additional troubleshooting tips for this problem.

camera's onboard memory is only 8MB, maybe 1 or 2 high resolution photo. delete the photo on the camera to clear error message and use only no more than 2 gig of sd card. It does not work with higher than 2 gig which is SDHC type sd card.
