Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a 4 year old Calypso Sears washer. With medium to large loads, and heavy loads, such as towels and blankets, it will wash the clothes, but stops and shows a code of CA or Cl when it goes to do the spin cylcle. I haven't been happy with this washer at all and am thinking the repair will be a couple of hundred dollars and that I should buy a basic model for $400. I have 4 kids and one on the way and need more of a work horse machine and not a tempermental one.

If you want a work horse, find your local Speed Queen dealer and buy a Top loading washer, Look for a model like an AWS76NW or AWS52NW. Basic Top loader, work horse.

Hello
Remember this washer is a water saver.I have the same question on my new washer. What i do is increase the size of the load.
Instead of running it on light load, ill put it on heavy this will allow more water to fill.

My Calypso washer beats up my clothes but doesn't clean them well. I have holes in my linens and all my towels have pulls in the terry.

I don't have the solution but I have the problem. I bought all new towels 2 years ago and they are all ruined.

Turn off ALARM - Whirlpool washer

This sounds like the imbalanced load alarm. This can occur with large heavy loads like blankets, bedding, lots of diapers (cloth), jeans etc. The best solution is to wash lighter loads and not overload the machine. If overloading continues, the machine could be damaged.

My Sears Kenmore, 2 years old washing machine is ripping clothes

If this has a paddle, check it for a sharp edge, also make sure it is not loose, the top cap should be able to be pulled off to see the locking
bolt, and you can check to see if it has loosened.

Feel everywhere on the inside of the washer for a edge that might be catching your cloths. You can also try the gentle cycle and see if it does not rip them.

You did not post the model# ,so I have no clue what style it is.

I ALWAYS START WITH VENTING WHEN CALLED WITH LONG DRYING TIMES BUT I HAVE SEEN WHERE ONLY HALF OF THE HEATING ELEMENT IS WORKING, WHICH IS PRETTY RARE. A NORMAL LOAD WOULD BE WHATEVER THE WASHER HAD IN IT WHICH WOULD BE LOOSLY FILLED TO THE TOP ROW OF HOLES IN THE WASHER TUB. THE ONLY OTHER QUESTION I WOULD ASK IS IF THE WASHER SEEMS TO BE SPINNING OUT PROPERLY AND IF THE CLOTHES ARE GOING INTO THE DRYER TOO WET.

the calypso washer is much older then 2 years. they stopped making them quite a few years ago. what you are seeing is how towels will come apart when washed with an aggressive washer. even expensive towels can be poorly sewn and will come apart when washed too hard. i might suggest you use the light cycle as it has a slower washing cycle speed. if you check your older and "better" towels are not doing the same thing as your new towels. i know its not fair but it is the way towels are now. you can try to remove the threads that are coming off your newer towels and then all should be ok, but there is nothing wrong with your washer just the way towels are now.

This could be an out of balance condition. When its happened to my washer, I rearrange the load if its large enough, and if its not, I find other items of like weight and add them to the load and start over. Calypso's are sensitive to fabric weight, so If you're washing towels, wash only towels and wash cloths. Make sure you put small items, like bras, panties, nighties, etc., in mesh bags and combine them with other light weight fabrics.

Have you checked the agitator? There may be sharp edges on the agitator blades. OR the towels may be getting stuck under the agitator and tub bottom. The agitator is supposed to suck the clothing down in the center and forcibly throw the clothing outwards against the tub. The cycle then repeats.
