My TV is only 1 1/2 years old. Unfortunately I did not buy the extended warranty. The problem I'm having with the TV is that it makes a pop sound and then the picture and sound will cut off. The TV light is still on but no picture or sound. When I unplug the TV and leave it off for about 30 min. and cut it back on everything works again. Please help. Thanks.

No, this is a convergence circuit problem. The cost of this repair is about $450. This is something that you can't do on your own. Call an Authorised Service Dealer and get estimate or buy new one . If you buy a new TV buy an extended WARRANTY because they are not as reliable as the OLD TV's.
If the picture was good prior to the 3D images, I would fix it. The convergence ICs either have poor connections or are defective. The IC is an STK392-110. There may be 2 inside the set. If you have this repaired, expect a labor cost in the $200 range. Request that the ICs be replaced rather than the board changed. This will maintain all of the internal settings and require only part replacement not a complete re-convergence adjustment.
id guess your set is like a 50v500 or 50v720 its a lcd rear projection
the blue cloud come from a warped lcd plate in the optic engine and would require replacment to correct this problem
if you have a extended warranty you would want to contact them
if not you might contact hitachi consumer affairs and ask them if there would be any assistance with this repair
I love your model, out of all the sets i work on i would say to keep it as long as you can. You have a simple convergence problem and its not to bad of a repair even at the DIY level. The new sets on the market these days brake about every 10months so to keep your 8 year old tv would be a smart choice. If you can solder and use a meter we can fix your set for under $100. If you call a repairman to fix it its going to run you $300-$500 depending on your area. But even at that its less than 1/4 the price of a quality new set. Remember when you buy a new set these days you dont only have to buy the tv you have to buy a stand to put it on or a wall mount (then if you mount it on the wall either you need to know how to do it or you will need to pay someone to do it) then i never would buy a new set without an extended warranty, then you have cableing to buy (most likely your going to hook it up hdmi) and so on. To put a brand new 52" tv in your house that i would reccomend after its all said and done your going to be looking anywhere from $2500-$3500. Hope this is the info you were looking for. any more questions, or if you want to try the repair yourself just ask!!

Its the tuner or the signal board and yes good call with the extended warranty. I always say on big ticket items, if your not a repairman, buy that extended warranty. Here is an article I wrote about the subject. http://www.techlore.com/article/14812/ Good Luck
