Question about Konica Minolta magicolor 2490MF Laser Printer

5 Answers

2490MF I am unable to get this printer to work with a netgear wgps602 wireless print server. I have tried several installs and re installs of both printer and server software. The PC sees the print server fine but I cannot print. I have tried both USB and Cat5 connection to no avail. Also tried fixed IP's and using DHCP nothing works I am convinced there is a problem with printers network port but then if I use a usb in the print server it doesn't print either although it does find the printer but says it has no paper (which it does) spent 2 frustrating days on this and I have been doing IT for 28 years. Any Ideas gratefully received. John K

I do have a cable tester and all cables are ok. printer works fine directly connected. print server is seen by configuration software but although accepts printer it gives a message "No Paper" which is false. thanks for all your advice so far guys, As I said have been IT engineer for long time so please talk as technical as you like. I still lean towards some sort of TCP/IP problem but TraceRt and angry IP show no obvious problems.

Many thanks for all you suggestions.I have now solved this problem. For some reason after setting up local tcp/ip port if I selected the 2490 from the list of printers it would not work, but if I just picked Minolta network printer all works fine. once again thanks for suggestions.

There are times when a printer will really not work with a print server. Ive been doing print servers for 4 years now almost everyday and i cant explain it as well. Although the problem happens 90% of the time on multifunction printers. Most likely because they are built to be bidirectional and work best as so while normal printers do not necessarily have to be bidirectional. Although Netgear is not gonna up and say that it does not work. They will tell you first it must be the unit or the printer, everything else other than it just simply aint gonna work.

Sample: I tried a 4 units of a Linksys WPS54G on 2 each of 2 different printers 2 works and 2 did not work on all (same model). We did everything we could possibly think of and it still didnt work. Finally i found out it had to do something with the power output of the printer on the USB not being able to reach the print server. Known issue with the printer. So you can check that as well.

Is the print server wired to a router or wireless>? if its wireless and you have a wireless router, The only problem there is the wireless settings of the pr9ont server and the router is not matching..
But if the print server is wired to a router, just power cycle the printer server then try to print...

Hopefully your printer and print server are compatible because not printer is compatible with a print server..

Hope that helps......

Check that you do not have a firewall working. Set the printer by inputting the Ip or printer name when installing, do not browse for printer.

First ensure that the printer is not faulty by connecting it as a local printer, if you cannot set printer to work as local then the printer may be faulty.
Once you ensure the printer is working locally disable all firewalls, including router firewall, to understand if it is a firewall problem.
Use Netgear printer server own software to install network printer, if it can see the printer it should be able to print, unless there is a firewall in the middle, or printer is faulty.
Check also cables, bet you do not have a cable tester, try replacing them to test if they are ok.

If your printer server software can see the Netgear printer server (which is a small router) then you do not need to ping your printer, or traceroute etc., as the printer server is obviously on the network, and is giving out an IP for the printer.

The first thing you need to do is ensuring that printer is working locally, you told us printer is fine on direct connection.

If printer is wireless second step is checking that printer is working on network cable connection.
Connect printer to server using USB, ethernet cable or parallel.
Connect printer server to computer or router using RJ45 ethernet cable.

Ensure you disable all firewalls both window firewall and eventual router firewall when you buid your network.

It will be useful if you can give us a description of your network architecture.

    For example

Netgear printer server to printer : USB connection
Netgear printer server to PC : Ethernet cable
Netgear printer server to Laptop : Wireless
LAptop to Additional router with WAN (broadband) : wireless
PC to Additional router with WAN : Ethernet LAN cable

How do i set up my wireless canon printer to my laptop? I keep getting messages saying can't find the printer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need: · Wireless print server
· USB printer
· Ethernet cable
· Computer
1. Step 1
Obtain a wireless print server that is compatible with both your wireless network and your printer. While the printer’s documentation may not explicitly say that it is compatible with a print sever, many are compatible, and this can be verified by checking the website of the print server’s manufacturer. If you have a multifunction printer, only the print function will work with most wireless print servers, though a few have recently added support for scanning and the printer’s other functions.
Step 2 Read all of the documentation that came with the wireless print server. The manual will detail the specifics of the installation routine.
Step 3 Connect the printer to the wireless print server via the USB cable. Connect the print server’s Ac adapter and turn the unit on.
Step 4 Connect an Ethernet cable between the wireless print server and your computer. This will be used for the initial setup only.
Step 5 Insert the CD supplied with the print server into your CD-Rom drive. Start the software if it does not start automatically. The application will walk you through the installation process, which includes setting the unit’s IP address, setting an access password, configuring it to connect to the wireless network, installing the drivers that allow the print server to use the printer and installing the print drivers on your computers.
Step 6 Choose how your print server will be addressed. Most units are set up to use dynamic addressing by default, which means that your wireless router will assign an IP address to it. This allows the server to be easily installed on the network, but it also means that the IP address of the printer may change over time. The other option is to assign a static IP address to your print server. This option is more reliable, because the print server will always use the same IP address, making it easier for the computers to find the printer and easier to access the print server’s online configuration application. If your router has the IP address of 192.168.0.1, for instance, set the print server to something like 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.0.3, as long as another device does not use that address.
Step 7
Set a password to be used to access the unit’s online configuration application.
Step 8 Configure the print server to access your wireless network. Give it the same SSID network name as your router and set it to use the same wireless channel. If encryption is used on the router, enable encryption on the print server, and enter the encryption key or password.
Step 9 Follow the instructions given by the print server’s software for installing printer drivers on the unit.
Step 10
Disconnect the Ethernet cable and allow the unit to connect via the wireless network.
Step 11 Install the printing drivers on each computer that will use the printer.
Step 12 Access the print server’s online configuration application to verify all settings by entering the IP address of the unit into a web browser, using the “http://192.168.0.2” format. Enter the administrator name and password.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Setup with a netgear print server

Be sure you have it setup correctly and the IP address is correct. Also you may want to check with Netgear on whether or not that model is compatible with Bi-Directional printers.

Can you connect it to your computer by wireless

Sure can. Just buy a wireless print server with USB output. They are made by most big names like: Trendnet, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, etc. I see them on Ebay for low prices 5-20 dollars.
Just make sure you get a match to the router you have for frequencies. For example: G or N

Good Luck

Wireless print device server

Yes.
The print servers really don't care what kind of printer is connected to it.
They are simply a device that carry signal from your computer to the printer.

Wireless problems with HP 3180

yes..that scanner issue keeps on popping up. has to do with the print command that's either compatible with the netgear standard, or it isn't..flukey, and not consistent..you might address netgear on this issue, but I've seen it before, actually..

Unable to print through the print server

First, make sure that you can print with the printer connected directly to your computer using a usb cable.

- Make sure the printer driver is installed and you can print with a direct connection
- Get the print server's IP Address, NetGear should have already provided you with this info.
- If your'e using windows xp, go to control panel > printers and faxes
- Right click on the printer icon and go to properties
- Click on the PORTS tab
- Click on ADD PORT
- Highlight Standard TCP/IP Port then click on New Port
- Click next
- Input the WGPS606 IP Address
- Print a test page...

-hope it works!!

Epson CX5800F printer Netgear PS121 Print Server difficulties

Here is a workaround:
http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Comp/comp.periphs.printers/2007-08/msg00456.html

Another thing to try if it STILL doesn't work is
Printer&Faxes>>Properties>>Advanced>>"Print Directly to Printer"

Just remember to restart after you try both of these. The Status Monitor in it's current for (at least for me) simply sucks.
