Question about Kenmore 3.8 cu. ft. HE3t Front Load Washer

Questions about the Bellow?

It seems that I need to replace the Bellow (Part# 8181662) on my Kenmore Elite HE3t Washer (Model# 110.42936200) and I have a few questions that I would like to ask.

1. The existing Bellow is ~6 years old and after last nights wash, was found in a heavily twisted state and would not seem to return to original form. Do I definately need to replace it?
2. Is replacing the Bellow a do-it-yourself type of job? Any tips/advice?
3. Where is the best place to order this from? I tried calling Sear's Parts (800) 366-7278 and was quoted $74.49 + $15.99 shipping.
4. The person whom I talked to at Sear's was saying they recommend replacing the Front $7.09 & Rear $12.09 Clamps when replacing the Bellow. Should I definately be ordering these as well?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I read the directions in the link posted August 2008. Is it really necessary to take the TOP off the machine to get to the Bellow on the front? Can't the fron panel be removed to get to the part? My machine is in a closet with the dryer sitting on top of it. Do you have any diagrams to help with the written directions?

If the door bellow is twisted, it may just be a simple matter of a clamp that has come loose allowing the bellow to shift. If its the front clamp located around the door opening, this can easily be resolved by removing the clamp, repositioning the bellow and reinserting the clamp. If its the rear clamp, however, you may have to remove the front of the washer to gain full access to it. There is an aligment mark (arrow) on the bellow at the 12 o'clock postion where it meets the wash tub. You need to make sure the arrow is pointing straight up. The following link explains how to replace a bellow:

Use this link even if you do not decide to replace the bellow. It provides good information on how the bellow is installed. Bottom line, if the bellow is not leaking, and you can resolve the twist, you do not need to replace it. Make sure you inspect for cracks or tears. As far as the additional components are concerned, inspect the clamps that you have before buying new ones. I've only had to replace these clamps on rare occasion. Last of all, "Yes", this is a job for a do-it-yourselfer. Its a little time consuming, but can be accomplished easily by following the link I provided. If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

PS You may check to see if they carry the bellow at a lower price. They offer competitive pricing and often carry the SAME part for less.

Kenmore elite He3 leaking water into tub

Outstanding diagnosis. You are correct to assume a water inlet problem and, "yes", this can be a common problem. If you live in area that has hard water, or if you use well water, sediment, rust and calcified deposits can clog the small diaphragms inside the valve causing them not to close properly and leak by. You can attempt to clean the valve by removing it and submerging it in a 50/50 solution of distilled vinegar and hot water for about 30 minutes, Sometimes this can dissolve any clogs and restore the valve to full operate. However, if this does not work, you will need to replace the valve.

The following link explains the steps required to replace the valve if you need directions:

Need part number for rubber boot on my kenmore elite HE3t washer

The part number is 8182119 and can be viewed at Just type in your model number and look for item number 5 under the "Door and Latch Parts" heading. In addition, you may not need them, but just in case, you may consider the inner and outer bellow clamps that hold the door seal in place. This are items 6 and 14 under the same heading. Sometimes they become damaged. If you need instructions on how to replace the door bellow, the following link explains:

If you have any questions along the way, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: You can find this part a little cheaper at Just use the "Search By Part Number" selection as your search criteria.

To keep the new bellow from mildewing, it is recommended by the manufacturer that you leave the washer door open while not in use and to periodically clean the bellow. Pull back the rubber folds in the door and make sure you do not have anything stuck that will cause odors and mildew. Small garments such as socks and underwear can commonly get stuck in this area of the door. Also, if you do not routinely use hot water, it is recommended that you run a "clean" cycle with a small amount of bleach about once a month to kill any bacteria.

Worn out bellows

The bellow definitely should not deform in the manner that you describe. When you replaced the bellow, did you line it up correctly? There are alignment marks (Arrows) on the tub and the bellow to ensure it is installed correctly? If the bellow is not aligned correctly, it will twist when the tub spins. If the shocks are worn, the bellow could also deform, but you would probably experience excessive vibrating during the final spin. If you are sure the bellow is installed correctly, and wish to replace the shocks, let me know. There are four of them on your washer. I believe they are sold in pairs. If you post your complete model number (located around the door opening), I can assist you in locating parts.
