Using Midi with a Compaq Armada 3500

When I plug in my Midi cables (from my electronic keyboard) to the adapter going into the USB port of my Compaq Armada 3500..... there's no response. I'm using Finale's "Allegro" 1998 version notation software. Have Win 98 installed.

What can I try ? or change ? Or should I just type letters?

MIDI Basics

MIDI is the language used by electronic instruments to tell each other what to play. When you press a key on a musical keyboard this keyboard will send a MIDI message to a computer or a musical instrument connected. The message says something like: start playing this note at this volume. When you stop pressing the key a new message is sent which says: stop playing this note.
MIDI messages can be transmitted using MIDI cables or USB. Old instruments had MIDI ports (round with five connectors inside) so a computer had to have a MIDI interface. Nowadays it's almost all done with usb.
The important thing to remember is that a MIDI message (and a MIDI cable) are just an instruction to play, they don't contain sound. The sound you hear when you press a key comes from the computer or the instrument connected to the keyboard, not from the plastic key you have pressed.
There is a lot more to say, but I would suggest you check wikipedia first and then come back with more specific questions.

How do I connect my midi keyboard to my comupter?

Hello mckinley,
To be able to do that you will necessarily have to have a midi port installed in your computer, obviously, if you ask the question it is because you do not have one of these port, the solution will be to buy a midi card and install it or have it installed in your computer, The other option is a MIDI to USB adapter. It is a device that connect into a USB port of your computer and the other end are midi ports to connect your keyboard.
Hope this answers all your questions Please remember to Rate/vote for any solution that helps you out. Leave a comment if you need more help. Thanks for using Fixya

How link my electronic keyboard MK 939 to compurer? what drivers are necesary?

I see the MK 939 has a midi out port. This can be connected to a midi in port on your computer via a usb to midi connector ( as shown in picture)davemello_1.jpg

Usb connectors have built in drivers so all you do is plug in, select the usb-midi device in music software.
A reasonably cheap one can be found here
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Converter-Music-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

OR

Connect keyboard via a soundcard eg soundblaster fatality with built in midi portsdavemello_0.jpg
Details of soundblaster products can be found here

A free version of music software is available for download here

I wanted to search the web on the compaq armada 3500 that i got and was wondering where the cable goes and if it even gets internet

hi yes you should be able to connect a wifi dongle via the usb port on the side for your internet connection, you would have to buy a pcmcia network card if you want network connection to internet through your modem, so if you have wifi router/modem then a dongle would be better..hope this helps

How do i hook up midi equipment?

Dear Armada 500 user:

The previous posts I have seen in response to your question both offer good answers as to USB hardware.

I would like to elaborate a bit on your quest by advising you of some very important facts regarding the total scenario as it relates to MIDI processing for your consideration, before you invest much more time or money in your endeavor.

Not knowing your particular desired "end-result" or ultimate intention is a bit of a challenge because there are some essential O/S, processor, memory and storage requirement limitations you may encounter depending on what you are wanting to accomplish. Current MIDI sequencing application solutions are much more demanding and intended for more current system platforms that support more memory, offer faster processors and larger hard drives.

Having said this, please must consider the following if you have not done so already.

  1. You should be at least on XP SP 3, although WIndows 2000 Workstation SP 2 is an acceptable minimum O/S platform though not preferred.
  2. The Armada 500 is limited to 512 MB RAM. This is a problem w/XP as a min. of 1GB RAM is recommended for XP SP3. It was introduced in 2002, so it is 7 years old!
  3. You'll probably need to upgrade your hard drive as the standard configs for this model maxed out at 30GB. (Note: you will probably only be able to upgrade to maybe an 80 GB HD due to BIOS limitations on supported drive capacities for that unit.) Check Compaq Armada 500 BIOS upgrade specs before you do this. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=96717&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=96231&taskId=135
Unless you are planning to use an older (5+ years old)
sequencing application which supports the limitations I have previously cited, you cannot efficiently implement a MIDI sequencing solution without experiencing limited performance, time-outs or possible compatability problems on this system.

Though MIDI data processing itself is NOT processor intensive, the applications associated with current MIDI sequencing solutions may well NOT be very compatible with this system due to the O/S, processor and memory support limitations.

I have addressed this very issue with numerous clients over the years, and it is at best, a frustrating endeavor.

Check this PCMCIA to USB 2 adapter as another option: IOGEAR GPU202 2 Port USB 2.0 PCMCIA CardBus Card You'll also need an A to D convertor/mixer/interface like the M-AUDIO Fast Track Pro 24-bit 96KHz USB Interface 4 x 4 Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface with Preamps. I recommend these interfaces almost exclusively to our home studio clients. Go to www.newegg.com for these and other adapter options.

With some tweaking and a little give and take, this can be perhaps accomplished with what you have, but I would recommend a newer notebook or PC & Windows O/S platform for best results with MIDI sequencing. I wish you well...

Connect usbtocomputer

Hello - I am too a personal owner of a CASIO CTK keyboard, a little older than yours (model CTK-601) a great keyboard BTW, and I have connected it to my computer successfuly.

There are 2 ways of connecting the keyboard to your PC......Using the MIDI outputs and a special MIDI to gameport adapter - if you have a very old system and have a joystick port (D-sub shape) on your soundcard or PC, then you use that cable. Of course this is legacy and stopped existing in newer computers, now USB is used.

Only the professional line of soundcards have direct MIDI inputs. For most of us, with consumer soundcards and PCs, there are no MIDI inputs.

The good news is that newer keyboards support USB MIDI and features direct USB connection - so all you have to do is install the drivers that are provided with your keyboard, usually a CD, and follow the instruction to install the USB drivers for your casio keyboard, BEFORE you plug in the cable (very important!) once installed you reboot and connect your keyboard using a USB cable

Now if your keyboard is older and has MIDI outputs, like mine for example, you will need to purchase a MIDI to USB adapter, those have MIDI cables in one end that plug to your keyboard and the other end a USB connector....... I don't know about the rules if I am allowed to post websites, but the product i'm using is the Uno from M-Audio - in google do this search:

"m-audio"uno

(exactly as shown above with quotes, and uno outside quotes)

Your CTK-810 may alreayd have a USB connector on it, as it is a newer generation keyboard - I am pretty sure it does - what you will have to do as stated above is located your bundled CD-ROM and install the USB drivers - you will need to purchase a USB cable (seperately).

MIDI hookup

The midi port looks like the bottom one in the picture:
http://www.e-tech.nu/images/sound_connectors.jpg

You need a cable from the keyboard midi (din connector) to the DB-15 on the sound card/mainboard. If you dont have a 15 pin midi/game connector you could buy a soundcard with midi onboard or a usb midi port like the:
