Question about Hitachi 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Worked fine on my macbook but not by my powerbook g4 or any other computer

My Hitachi 500BG External worked fine on my mac book with os X but that crashed. Now it won't be read by my girlfriends Powerbook g4 from 5 years ago, my friends PC or anybody else's PC (XP and Vista).
Her "Powerbook says OS X unable to read any volumes". It won't show up in finder either.
The PC's recognize that new hardware was inserted into the USB, but won't recognize it as a drive. Nothing comes up on My Computer. What was the point of backing everything up? There are no clicking or beeping noises, it just won't be read.

I would suspect a corrupted catalog file, these are the map that a comupter uses to find its way around the drive, they are also the first casualty when a crash corrupts something. Disc warrior will write a new catalog and fix everything. PCs do not see discs formatted for macs.

Basically, can DriveWire "see" a Mac hard drive on a PC?

So, when you plug it into your WIndows XP machine, does it show up in "My computer"? No? Try this,
Turn the computer off without the external hard drive being plugged in.
plug the external hard drive in a usb port, power up, the systems post boot up will find the drive and inform windows what hardware is installed.
When windows boots up, it will look at all the hardware and find the external hard drive, when windows finishes booting up you should be able to see the drive in my computer.

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive to preview whether your files can be recovered.BTW, you can get it from
Data Recovery for Mac OS X
Data Recovery for Windows OS

My seagate hard drive cannot be detected on the desktop anymore. Any ideas what to do? I have a Mac Powerbook G4

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link.

MacBook won't recognize my Lacie Rugged Hard Disk. Disk utility will see it but won't verify it nor will it repair it. says it needs to be reformatted yet it won't even let me initialize it. it is brand...

Is your MacBook as fast as the Lacie Rugged Hard Disk is?

Because solid state drive wasn't available on MacBook Pro at the initial time when it launched. Hard drives on all current Apple laptops are equipped with Sudden Motion Sensor technology. In fact, the Apple laptops that came with Sudden Motion Sensor are: All Intel-based Apple portables such as the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, PowerBook G4 computers starting with PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz), and iBook G4 computers starting with iBook G4 (Mid 2005) have Sudden Motion Sensor technology. You MacBook may not have come with that technology that could be the reason you are unable to connect it.

PowerBook G4 does not seem to recognize. (Worked well on previous Apple lap top)

If your Firelite SmartDisk was formatted for a PC, and you are using the Mac side of the G4 it won't. They use a different format scheme. Need to load Parallel, bootcamp, or another virtual PC program, and then Windows. Using that it will recognize it.

If you know another Mac user that is using both sides (Mac and Virtual PC) is a quick way to retrieve data to move it. Be careful reformatting the FireLite. There are some more complex ways. Hope that this helps.

PS: I use a 160GB FireLite on my G4, MacBook Pro as well as my Tower and notebook PCs.

Connected IDE Drive does not mount on desktop

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.

Maxtor II external-Won't work on new MacBooks or MacMini's w/duo core CPU's. Junk.

Did you have to format the external drive when you set it up on your G4? You'll probably have to format the drive with the computer you want to use it with. I have seen external hard drives unusable until formatted.
I hope I'm wrong about this, and good luck.
