HARDWARE: You will need a turntable, a phono pre amp, and an analogue to digital converter.

SOFTWARE: You will need software on your computer to take the adigital data stream from the analogue to digital converter (probably via a USB cable) and transfer it into mp3 files on your computer, which can then be saved in iTunes or any other number of digital music platforms.

There are turntable solutions designed to do this. Some have all 3 hardware elements integrated into the turntable, and come with the necessary software on an included cd-rom. I have seen these kits for under $200. Not exactly audiophile grade turntables, mind you, but they will get that one off vinyl of grandpa's barbershop quartet preserved in the digital domain.

You cannot connect the turntable via a microphone port. You need to connect via a USB port. If you have not got a USB port to connect it as the others are in use, you can buy an extension USB socket which, will allow you to put more devices via one USB port.

You have either connected (wired up) the cartridge wrong or the amp needs a magnetic cartridge pre-amp.

You will have got the audio muted in your windows recording mode. If you right click on your speaker icon it will say recording devices. Click that and you will be able to see all the devices and if they are activated.

Hi, we don't have that model turntable in NZ so I can't say exactly where the adjustment for the tone arm lift position is. However on the majority of turntables it will either be beside the base of the tonearm possibly under a rubber grommet or if you remove the rubber platter mat and there is a hole in the platter near the outer edge rotate the platter whilst looking through the hole for a screw near the tonearm. Adjust anti clockwise a little and test. Fine tune until you are happy with where it stops. John. styluscity.com

The turntable won't make sound on its own when connected to the USB port. There are probably some drivers on the CD packed with the table that you'll need to install, and then you'll need to select the device in the Windows sound control panel. You'll also need some software to record and edit your vinyl if you want to transfer your records to CD.

I'm not familiar with the brand of turntable you have, just the ION, but it probably came bundled with some application on a CD. The ION table comes with Audacity, as well as some trial versions of audio processing (click and pop filter, hiss remover, etc.). Audacity is free, open-source software you can download here if you want it. It allows you to listen to and record your vinyl audio as wave files, then edit it, split tracks, add effects, and other fun things.

I'm thinking this is 100% impossible. There is absolutely no way you can get a cassette tape to play on a turntable.

Argos has a turntable for 90 pounds which converts Vinyl to MP3 or wave . There are similiar versions for cassette tapes. If you need help finding one. let me know
