I have an unsecured Linksys wireless set up installed. How can I go back and make it secure?

Hi jenkinsbebeg,

There's a possibilty that you will get an unstable connection due to unsecured Linksys setup. Poeple around you can pick up your network easily and could eat up your bandwith. So it is highly recommended to set up a security on your router. There are several options on how to set up or configure your router. You can use the setup wizard or by opening your web browser.

Here are some steps on how to set up your router using your web browser:

1. Open your web browser ( Internet Explorer, Mozilla ).

2. Now enter the the following URL: http://192.168.1.1

3. Enter your Username and Password.

common username and password for linksys:
--> username blank, password "admin"
--> username "admin", password blank
--> username "admin", password "admin"

4. You need to connect to the internet then click "internet setup".

5. From the drop down menu select DHCP for cable modems, and for DSL modems please select "PPPOE".

6. Now set the SSID (Service Set Identifier) to identify your network name. You could also change the password from here.

7. At this point you can encrypt your wireless connection using the WEP ( Wireless Encryption Protocol ) or WPA. If you will be using the WEP just go under " wireless security" option, then enter your preferred password (passphrase) then click on "generate".

From here you should now be able to connect to your router using your preferred password.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

How do i make my linksys router secure as at the moment it is unsecured

It depends what you mean by secure. If it is just acces to the router settings then add an adminstrator password. If it is wireless security you are refering to then goto you wireless settings and choose WPA2 as i find it more secure however you can choose any you would like.

I want to put a pasword on my netgear to stop people using my internet its unsecure at the moment

1. Use an ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.
4. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.
Under SSID Name, Give a Unique name for Wireless N/w

5. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key).
6. Under Security Encryption (WPA-PSK) > Passphrase, enter a passphrase.
7. * The passphrase may either be a string of 64 hexidecimal digits, or word/phrase of 8-63 ASCII characters.
* SAVE or KEEP NOTE of the passphrase - it will be required to connect wirelessly to your network.
8. Click Apply to save your settings.
9. Scan and Connect to your Wireless N/w on your Wireless Computer with your Password

Have lynksys wireless router but is unsecure -

You can enable WEP on your router to make your wireless network secure.

To access the screen of the router, type the ip address of the router in the address bar of Internet explorer or Firefox. By default the ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1. If this doesn't work, go to the command prompt (Start -> run -> type cmd). Type ipconfig. Copy the default gateway.

It will prompt you for a user name and password. By default leave the user name blank and then type admin in the password field.

Once you are in the Linksys screen, go to the Wireless tab -> Wireless security.

For the security mode, select WEP.

WEP encryption: 64bits 10 hex digits.

On the Passphrase field, type a wireless password of your choice, then click Generate.

It will give you a key. You will need to copy the wireless network key because you will need to enter this key on your PS3 and laptop. Take note that this is also case sensitive.

Once you click save settings, it will disconnect all your wireless computers.

You will need to manually enter the wireless network key on all your wireless devices. Without the network key, other computers will not be able to connect to your network.

I hope this helps.

Please take a moment to leave a comment if you find this solution helpful. Your feedback is important and very much appreciated.

I need to set up a security password for my router at the moment i have a unsecured network?

Open an internet window type in your router's ip address and hit go, this will take you into your router's configuration. In there you should see a wireless section in which will be security, you can secure your network there (use WPA or WPA2 it's the most secure). When you have set this you will need to enter your password to all the wireless devices connected to your network.
If you google your routers make and setting up security, you should find a step by step guide.
Hope this helps

Security

Till the time you put a access code for the wireles it would show it as a unsecure connection.You can change this by accessing the router page.Just type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of internet explorer.Than it would ask you for username and password.Its ussually admin and the password field blank.Than go to wireless settings and the security to WEP.than you can put a password of either 5 or 10 digits.U can put your phone # which would be easy to remember and than just save the setting.Next time when you would try to connet to it than it would ask you to put the access code and will show up as secure connection.
I hope that helps
