When you only get 5 mbps are you connecting to the new router wirelessly or via the ethernet cable? If it is wirelessly then try connecting with an ethernet cable and see if you still get 5 mbps. If so then try resetting the router (the procedures for this will be explained in the manual) and re-test. Wireless connections can slow down due to obstacles such as thick walls or other obstacles of that type. If all else fails return the unit and try another.

I can't hook my computer up to my phone line for internet. I have my router and another desktop hooked up to the phone line through the router.

That modem is in itself a router. However it only has one Ethernet port and no means of broadcasting a wireless Internet Signal which makes its function of a Router somewhat useless. What you need a(n) (wireless) access point. The Access Point will give you more Ethernet slots allowing more computers to be connected to the modem/router via CAT5 (Ethernet) cables. Depending on if you get a Wireless access point or not you might also be capable of using a wireless adapter to connect to the 2wire and get Internet access.

Let me know if I need to clarify any of the points above or if I can assist you further.

Trouble with paradyne or linksys

Just saw your post, so please accept my apologies for being almost a month late in responding, as I only joined this service on March 26th.

1. When a modem has both usb and ethernet, only ONE of the two should be used as most isp modems will allow one or the other.

2. Your Vonage should be discreet and not intermingled with the rest of your system. It would be better to connect the Vonage to a router, and not the router to the Vonage. iow, do not connect the Vonage modem between the isp's modem and your router.

3. denigration of service or slowdown is typical with VOIP if more than 2 systems whether telephone or other systems are connected, due to the ringer voltage splitting that occurs when you put more units on the Vonage, or any other Voip modem. One ISP solves this by providing separate outputs for Voip and Ethernet.

Observation of these rules should speed up your system.

I dont know the correct way to hook up my cable modem, computer, and wireless router together

hello!

-- is this a brand new router?
-- who is your internet service provider?
-- what is the brand of your modem?
-- what is the operating system of your compter

you may try the basic connection:

-- while the router is powered on, reset the router for 10 secs
-- turn off your modem, router and computer
-- from the ethernet port of your modem, to the internet or wan port of your router
-- from one of the regular port of your router to the ethernet card of your computer
-- turn on the modem first, after 5 secs, turn on the router, another 5 sec turn on your pc and check if you can get online

Desktop has very poor/slow connection through wireless router

This sounds like a spyware/virus problem. Try running the computer in safe mode(With networking) and see if it's any faster. You should also run your Anti-spyware,AV apps to check for problems.
