The Sony DCR-HC20 Mini-DV is a 2004 model and has both USB and Firewire connectivity. You only need the USB since your computer has USB. The original camcorder was supplied with a proper USB cable having a standard computer connector at one end and a mini usb connector at the camcorder end.

You have to install software/drivers on the computer for your operating system (typically supplied by Sony on a CD with the camcorder) and connect the camcorder to the computer with the USB cable.

You also need DirectX9.0b installed on the computer which should already be there with Windows XP, Vista etc.

I have a Vixia HF100 camcorder with blank display

If the camera failed during normal usage and is not the subject of damage then Canon offer a fixed price repair service. In the UK, whatever the fault they charge £127 for the repair. That's cheaper than a new HD camera!

I discovered that the USB connection only works with the Canon DM-100.

I was able to connect the composite cables (red, white, yellow) from the AV out connection of the Canon HF 100. This works fine. It now records on DVD - R; DVD +R:
DVD - RW and DVD + RW.

Hope this helps anyone else with this problem.

Transfering from jvc-hd7 to computer

You should be getting .tod files, not .mov files. The resulting files are of the type MOVxxx.tod, where xxx is a hexidecimal number. You then convert the .tod files (for PC's only) to .mpg files with the Cyberlink PowerDirector software that came with your camera (on the CD).

Hope this helps.
