Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator
I would like my answers displayed in decimals instead of fractions, can I switch between the two?
What you do is click on the 'mode' button and go down to the 'Exact/Approximate' parameter and choose Approximate. hit enter and you're good.

I don't know about a permanent solution but you can get it to give you decimals with a second keystroke. just hit the diamond key and enter and that will get the calculator to approximate the fraction for you.

If the result is already calculated and displayed, press the [S<=>D] key It will convert a fraction or radical to decimal. This is always possible. If the result is decimal it may be converted to a fraction or a radical (Not always possible).
If the expression to be evaluated is still in the command line and you have not pressed the [=] key, you can force the result to be displayed in decimal format by pressing [SHIFT][=] instead of just [=].
More permanently. If you do n o care for fractions and radicals, set the Input/Outpout mode to LineIO. To do do press [SHIFT][MODE] to access the (SETUP) screen and select [2:LineIO]

To convert a single value, press the S<>D key. To have all answers appear as decimals, press 2nd MODE 2 to select LineIO mode.
