The reason the pump will lose prime anytime is because insted of the pump pulling in water, it is now pulling in air from some source. When you set up the pool to be vacuumed, you must be sure to prime the vacuum hose with water before inserting the vacuum hose into your suction. The easiest way to do this is to:
1. attach vac.head unto the vac.pole and 1 end of the vac hose.
2. holding on the the other end of the vac. hose so it doesn't get away from you. slowly lower the the set up into the pool and make sure the pole doesn't get away from you either.
3. now you will notice part of the hose is filled water and part of it is floating ontop of the water with air still in it. Now while sitting on the edge of the pool, pull the hose toward you to where you think the part of it is now full of water. than slowly feed the rest of the hose, hand over hand until the end of the hose and you will see water come out the end, the hose is now totally full of water.
4. This is the tricky part, cuff your hand over the end of the filled hose and with the pump running plug the end into the suction, re: skimmer or suction port.
At this point you might have induced some air into the system and the pump may lose prime or start to lose prime. Go over to the pool equipment and if present, bleed the air out of the filter.
Hope this solves your problem.

Pump loses prime, smack switch. + prime, all is good. Bad switch?

Pump should not lose prime from switch turning off or defective, most of the time it's a check valve or a rubber flap the seals the water in the pipe and pump

My 24' above groung pool with a 1.5hp pump and sand filter ssems to be losing prime when i hook up my aqua critter. If i unhook the critter the pump re-primes. Any sugguestions as to why?

Your hose either has a hole in it, at the sections at the waters surface where it is exposed to the air? Even a "Pin" hole will create the symptom you are experiencing.
Or... there is a clog in the unit itself.
It appears that you are either sucking in air, or the water flow is being blocked. The pump should pull water no problem through a vacuum hose or a suction style pool cleaner. If the pump loses prime, then "Water" flow is being restricted either physically are mixing with air.

Are vacuuming the pool . My sand filter does not work right it has no pressure going out to the pool. a pool store said it might be air bound .bleed the air out same thing

Do you have problems priming the system? If so you may have a suction leak in the plumbing attached to the front of the pump or a bad 0-ring seal in a valve. Symptom would be that when you set up to vac. The pump would lose prime or move very little water. Also maybe a clogged pump impeller.

My well pump keeps losing its prime. The pump

There may be a slight leak within the suction piping, just enough to allow air to enter as its sits for an extended time. I'd be ceratin the foot valve is good and check over all of my suction pipe connections.
I hope this may have helped,

PUMP LOSES PRIME OVERNIGHT. ALL CONNECTIONS, ADAPTORS, AND CHECK VALVES HAVE BEEN REPLACED TO ELIMINATE ANY AIR LEAKS. SEEMS LIKE THERE IS EITHER A LEAK UNDERGROUND IN THE SUPPLY LINE OR A PROBLEM WITH THE...

Yes, any air leak could allow the pumps system to draw air in to it. This could happen through a gasket or the mechanical seal although if the foot valve is in good shape and there are no leaks within the piping system the pump should hold prime. My guess is there is some type of leak within the suction piping that is creating a slight vacuum. A vacuum leak, even a small amount, is very powerful at drawing air in to it. My first thoughts are to insure the suction piping and its components are all proper.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Losing prime on the pump

When the pump loses prime, you just turn of the unit, turn it back on and wait about a minute before pulling the trigger. The pump establishes prime when you first turn it on, but you need to wait long enough to let it get all the air out.
