I too have the head that Pauline is taking about on my UM3830 Makita, I had trouble with it straight away and remember conversations with the dealer (Terrier Tools Uk) where they did not recognise the spool I describded, eventually they sent a replacement head which was completely different to the old black one with a single spool, the new one was Makita Blue. Anyway I dressed up the old spool while waiting and made sure it was a loose fit between the parts and it then worked just fine. I beleive the way to reload the line on the old black single spool type is to nine up the arrows on the bump-feed nut with the thimbles that the line pops through, then from the outside insert through the thimbles the ends of a single length of the line, the ends should find their way into the little holes in the spool. Then turning the bump-stop nut in the direction of "rewind" that is stamped on the spool outer casing should wind the line into the spool, you know its working okay when both sides of the line are being wound in, once its fully wound in you can cut the line leaving you with a pair of lines sticking out,,,well thats how I do it!

Take a length of about 6 foot of line, kink it in the middle and pass this through the hole in the spool. Wind the two lengths of line around the spool in their own divisions and in the same direction. The direction of wind is embossed in the reel and the line should be wound tightly and held all the while. When you have about 6-8 inches left in your hand, bring the cover up to the spool and carefully pass the two ends of the line through the holes, push the cover all the way over while pulling on the two pieces of line and ensuring that the lines stay on their own side of the division on the spool. Fit and tighten the bump nut and trim the lines to just about the cut-off blade.
The lines should trail out of the holes in the direction of the machine's rotation. Try cut with the tip of the line as much as possible. Cutting nearer the drum flexes the line and will lead to early breaking of the lines. Run the motor at a constant speed and rather move the cutting head in and out of the weeds to affect a deeper cut
The spool head I have has only got one division not two - nor is there a hole right through the spool to thread the line through, which is why none of the instructions I can find (including the manual sent me by the dealer) seems to work.
The only other type of head I can think of is the one used for line cutting on a brush cutter and this is a pulley with one or two holes in it that a single or double knotted line passes through. Pictures I have looked up for your machine show a cover over the spool with holes in it as in this reference:- http://www.hobuk.co.uk/acatalog/Makita-2...
