Question about HP Pavilion dv9000z Notebook
I turned off my HP laptop last night and turned it back on this morning. When I did this I got an error box saying there was a security/privacy issue and it only shows a default desktop. I can't find any of our old icons and information. The user account has our name but none of our files. Any help would be appreciated.
Firstly, check C:\documents and settings\
All your user accounts should be there. Back those files up somewhere before you lose them for good.
After that, if you're on XP... go start, run, type "cmd" and enter.
In the DOS box, type "gpupdate /force".
That last command will forcibly update the local group policies... which should restore everything to normal.
If that doesn't work, right-click my computer, properties, advanced, user profiles, settings. There might be some unknown account types there. Try copying them to a new profile.
Lastly... if all else fails, you may have a corrupt registry. Go start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore.
Launch that, and pick a date before the issue began, and let it roll back to that time.
In any case, your documents and shortcuts can't be wiped from a registry problem or group policy corruption. =-]
