This seems to be a problem with the corruption of file extensions,
In this case all you need to do , is download and install a program called as tweak ui from the below location ,
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-v2-a-tweak-ui-for-windows-7-vista
and then select the option of repair file extension associations and this should solve your problem.
Remember this trick whenever you have such problems ..:)
