SOURCE: ice in the bottom of frigidaire side by side frost proof freezer

take all the bottom shelves and baskets out of the freezer. look at the back wall of the freezer. youll see a block of ice in a metal pan looking part at the bottom of the rear panel. there is a hole in the bottom of that pan. thats the defrost drain. its clogged. use a hair dryer to get all the ice out then use hot water to flush out the drain hole.

We have a 8 year old Maytag Side by side model MZD2766GEW and the fidge side doesn't stay cold, just cool. The freezer works fine and there isn't any frost. Any idea what we need to do? Thank you, Greg

For those who had the control board replaced or are experiencing the frig side warming while the freezer side continues freezing; The problem may (still) be a faulty control board. I fixed the issue by replacing a $1.00 capacitor on the board. I'm not a techy and it wasn't too difficult to solder. More info on what to do here; DIY Chatroom

In the mean time, there is ice forming behind the back panel in the lower section of the freezer. This blocks airflow to the frig side.
I use a pump pressure garden sprayer with hot water to defrost the coils. Gets the job done in 20 minutes and I don't have to worry about defrosting items in the freezer.

Frig not cooling

check evaporator fan to see if it is blowing air over to ref. side.you also could have a defrost problem.if you notice frost forming on the back panel inside freezer then it is a defrost problem.all parts are in freezer that need to be checked.

Fridgedaire Elite frost proof fridge part not cooling, Freezer sems fine

If the frozen side is colder than normal and some extra frost is forming where the fan blows, and there is ice in the bottom of freezer compartment, and the cool side is not cool enough, their is a good possability the defrosting unit is not removing all the frost and ice . the defrosting unit has a timer (usually near thermostat) that turns off the cooling fan and compressor and turns on a small heater around the evaporator ( about 20 minutes every 2 days) (evaporaror is cold heat exchanger coil inside the back wall behind a cover near the recirculating fan0, the fan circulates air to both compartments through two small openings, if these openeing are closed by ice buildup cool air can not circulate to the cool side. cure 1. remove all food and leave fridge off for 24 hours with doors open (take precautions to ensure children can't get locked in side and suffocate, if you get a qt of water in bottom of unit (may leak on floor) ice buildup that the defrost heater can not remove melted and was your problem . turn frig on replace food on unit. cure 2. turn frig off, remove food from both sides, remove shelves that block access to evaporator, remove cover over evaporator if you see the evaporator coils free of ice look at openings (2) to other side, one may be blocked with ice the other with frost, carefully melt ice with hair dryer.
If the evaporator coil is solid ice heater or timer or fan has failed. good luck

Frig side is not cooling.

Check if there is frost on the back wall of the freezer, if so it is not defrosting. Many GE fridges need a new defrost heater every couple of years. If it's not defrosting, you can get by for a while by unplugging the fridge and leaving the freezer door open for 24 hrs, then plugging back in.

Frig won't cool, freezer works fine

Defrost unit completely. You're frosting up. Then, avoid leaving the door open, leaving liquids and food uncovered. Clean condenser coils. If it happens again, you need refrigerant.

Frig side by side problem

I rolled the frig forward enough so I could unplug the power cord from the outlet. Then
I removed the freezer back panel and found the evaporator coils completely encased in frost. I used hot water in a 20 ounce sqeezable water bottle to remove the caked frost from the coils. I used the back panel as a chute to route the water into a large square bucket I placed on the floor right in front of the freezer. I then disconnected the defrost heater and checked continuity with my meter on the Rx1 scale. Meter needle did not move when connected across the heater indicating that the heater was bad. Called the local parts supplier and gave them the numbers off the old part. They had it in stock for $27.31 so went and picked it up, plugged it in, put in the mounting screws, replaced the freezer back panel, and plugged the frig in. I turned both the freezer and frig thermostats to their normal position. Four hours after my better half got all the food back in the freezer and the frig, the temperature in the refrigerator was 36 degrees.
