Question about Maytag Refrigerators

Freezer is cold, but refrigerator is warm

Hi. My Maytag side by side freezer / refrigerator has suddenly broken down. Model MZD2766GEW, 6 years old.

The freezer is at 0 degrees F, but the refrigerator section is at 60 degrees F. This happened suddenly. No vents seem to be clogged. The lights are on and I hear something like a fan runnning on the freezer side. Does this mean that something like a fan that should be moving air from the freezer side to the refrigerator side has stopped functioning, and if so what do you think that it would take to fix the problem? I can't get service outside of my own working hours, so I would like to attempt it myself this evening if feasible. Thanks! Andy, in Carrboro, NC

The person that I chatted with also suggested that this might be the problem and I am in the process of defrosting the refrigerator. Another possibility that he suggested might be a bad refrigerator thermostat. Thanks!

I defrosted the refrigerator for about 12 hours and that seemed to fix the problem. I can now feel some air coming out of the vent on the refrigerator side, whereas before hardly any air came out. The temperature on the refrigerator side has dropped to the low 40s. I am going to defrost again, this time for 24 hours, to make sure that all of the frost in the ducts has melted. Thanks Fixya gurus! Andy

Same problem on a maytag freezer top model. The coils in back of the freezer compartment totally iced up (you have to take the cover off it to fully see it, but icing is pretty obvious even without the cover off...). The defrost timer was rotating OK (you can see it through a hole next to the temp controls; I marker it and watch it for 15 min to verify its moving ...)... Turned out the problem was the defrost element; it showed no continuity and a crimp electrical connection to one the element ends had failed (maybe poor manufacturing). Managed to mouse an OK connection with soldering gun and gooped some hi-temp silicone over it. Its still working OK a month later anyway.

But you really have not solved the problem.....there are 3 parts to a defrost ststem a timer a heater and a thermodisc one of these items is bad if you are getting th frost build up and if you dont find which one is bad after a week or so it will just frost up again.

Maytag plus model mzd2766gew freezer working refrigerator

Hi!!

Check
Temp. control knobs,

Small fan in freezer, it should start working after opening the freezer door for a couple of minutes. If it does not start, use a pen or pencil to turn the blades, if it kick in, replace motor.

Remove freezer back panel (where the little fan is) and check for iced evaporator coil, if so, unplug unit and use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt ice, make sure the air duct going to the fridge is clear.
Once this is done, restart unit

We have a 8 year old Maytag Side by side model MZD2766GEW and the fidge side doesn't stay cold, just cool. The freezer works fine and there isn't any frost. Any idea what we need to do? Thank you, Greg

For those who had the control board replaced or are experiencing the frig side warming while the freezer side continues freezing; The problem may (still) be a faulty control board. I fixed the issue by replacing a $1.00 capacitor on the board. I'm not a techy and it wasn't too difficult to solder. More info on what to do here; DIY Chatroom

In the mean time, there is ice forming behind the back panel in the lower section of the freezer. This blocks airflow to the frig side.
I use a pump pressure garden sprayer with hot water to defrost the coils. Gets the job done in 20 minutes and I don't have to worry about defrosting items in the freezer.

Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is

Something has stopped the cold air being ducted from freezer side to refrigerator side of things. Possibly duct blocked due to ice build up, evaporator not self defrosting etc. Turn unit off for a few days till it melts and then turn back on. If it was because a door has been left slightly open you will be ok. If for any other reason you will want to have it serviced in the next week or so.
