hi Paulmahoney.
If your washer fills with water but doesn't agitate, the problem is likely to be a faulty lid switch, a broken belt, or a problem with the motor. (Note: Direct-drive washing machines do not have belts.) To diagnose the problem, do the following: 1Check the washing machine's spin cycle.
read up some more at this link might help you out some more. Washer Doesnt Agitate or Spin
or this link. washing machine Wont agitate or spin Google Search
Under the agitator you have what is called (agitating dogs). The agitator will have to be removed. The top should spin off, you will be able to look down into the agitator and see a bolt. Remove this bolt and the agitator can be pulled out. The agitators are small pieces of plastic with small teeth. These teeth get worn out over time or if the washer is overloaded. When the agitator free spins one way the teeth grab a (gear) on agitator and this is how you get the washing action (agitating). These dogs are easy to replace and cost about $5. Yes it does reverse. If the motor is running in agitate pull off the agitator and check the agitator drive (bell) (white plastic bell shaped) on top of the agitate shaft is not stripped. You should not be able to turn. To remove the agitator fill first about 8 in of hot water, drain and pull up on agitator with fingers under the bottom or a belt.
Number 310 probably is stripped out. Mounted under the agitator this is called a drive block/bell.I believe the part comes with a new bolt also. This plastic piece has splines inside that slip onto the tranny. Over time the splines wear smooth and the washer will not agitate. To get to it you yank off the agitator:
there is a bolt under the fabric softner dispenser (if you have one) if not, its a plastic cap on the top of your agitator which pops off by hand or a butter knife.. then there is a bolt under there that holds the unit down..grap the bottom of your agitator and loosen the bolt and remove it...then lift up carefully on the whole thing..careful not to loose the seal and bolt to put the agitator back in place....good luck..
Once the top cap of the agitator is removed, take a pair of pliers and pull up forcefully on the plastic cap inside. Then take a 7/16 socket wrench and remove the agitator bolt. Pull the agitator apart. Get part number 3366877 from any appliance parts store.
It sounds like the agitator teeth, that are plastic, are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, and check the circular teeth inside, to see if they are worn out. These plastic teeth are the agitator part of the washer, where as the spinning part is a metal set of teeth, at the bottom of the agitator. You see the metal teeth, when you take the agitator completely out. You will have to replace the agitator if the teeth are worn out.
There is a plastic coupler piece that goes bad under the agitator. The agitator pulls straight off with a little oooompf.
The coupler is bolted to transmission shaft
sometimes i have to use a puller to remove coupler as its seized to trans shaft
