I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L. Just the other day it started acting up. In 1st gear it doesn't shift until about 3000rpms, or untill i let off the gas, and it also lacks power in 1st gear. Where I should be accelerating hard at around 3000rpms, its more just revving and not accelerating. I have a few ideas as to what it could be and how to fix it, but any suggestions would be great!!

I just got some Lucas Transmission Treatment today. And really all I need is for it to last through the summer cuz I'm enlisting at the end of summer and I'm just gonna sell it. I had a '97 dodge ram last summer and transmission went out on it, but it had been slipping for years before that. Well thanks for the help, I'm gonna change the fluid and filter and see what that does.

Those are known for transmission problems. I would change the fluid and filter in the transmission. Also I would put 2 quarts of Lucas Transmission Treatment in it and if its not too late that should make it last a little longer, I am sure it will eventually start slipping worse and then start slipping in all gears but with Lucas you might get another couple years out of it depending on how hard you are on it. Sorry its not better news but I am a mechanic and I work on 6-8 dodge trucks a month and 1 or 2 will be showing sighns that the transmission is slipping. One way to tell if it is slipping is to pull the trans dipstick when its warm and you have driven a few miles and see if there are a lot of air bubbles on it. If there are, its slipping.

I actually just got some lucas transmission treatment today. I only really need it to last the rest of the year, cuz then I'm enlisting. We had a '97 ram and the transmission was slipping for years before it finally gave out at 155k miles. My rig has 166k miles on it and I figured I could get a lot more out of it but maybe not. Thanks for the tips, hopefully changing the fluid and filter will work for now.

1st 3rd and 5th gears are spongy to shift into

Start with the firs post and have those cables and linkage assembly looked at if those are good then what you have is a loose bolt on the transmission that bolt is responsible to keep the gear in place when loose the transmission will do what you described as well nothing more nothing less.

1994 dodge ram 1500 2wd wont shift out of 1st gear.reverse works

take bottom pan off clean out your pressure sensor .. tends to get mini metl flakes caught up in there wich is also a bad sign that your tranny is going out but this will buy you atleast another 2 to 3 months

Can a faulty speed sensor in a 96 dodge ram automatic make it only read 1st and 2rd gear

not likely, the speed sensor sends the info to the pcm and will affect gear change, though its highly unlikely that the speed sensor can make the pcm "read" first or second gear, speed sensor sends info to the pcm to help it decide when to shift gears/apply abs/ etc

you are right to think it is a sensor. trash can get into the shift solenoids and make a trans act funny. you could drop the pan and replace the solenoids located in the back of the valve body.

1999 DODGE RAM 1500, 170,000 MILES 5.9 v8 TRANSMISSION DOE NOT WANNA SHIFT FROM 1ST TO SECOND UNTIL AT LEAST 3200 RPMS AND THEN I HAVE TO LET OFF GAS AND IT WILL SHIFT TO SECOND AND THIRD MOST THE TIME....

I'd look at the vacuum modulator for a leak, and the govenor for sticking weights. Check that the vacuum line has a clear flow and is not restricted by pulling it off while it's running. Theres a cover near the tail housing that has bolts holding it on, take it off and look inside at the weights. Pull it out and look at the gear teeth on the end for wear, you may have a worn spot that is'nt letting it spin properly.
