The 2 most common issues are a freon leak or the outside unit fan start capacitor goes out. It's more likely a capacitor issue. They fail regularly, especially when it's hot out. I had a fan capacitor go out on one of my 3 units last year and it cost close to $300 for an AC company to come out and fix it.
