You can usually go into the control panel (click start then control panel) and then double click on printers. You can right click the printer you see in the list and select properties and somewhere inside that area is where the available ink is displayed.

Since you mentioned you had an HP Printer, it is most likely you have their software installed. In this case, this icon should be at the bottom right of your screen, more commonly known as the system tray.

Not Installed my Printer

In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken . Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or
poor ink cartridge contacts.

How to check ink level on printer cartridges for aa HP F2430 printer?

Press and hold the power and the cancel buttons together and it would print a sheet which would show the estimated ink levels or go to an icon on your computer named Solution center and at the bottom of that screen click on settings>printer toolbox>estimated ink levels

How to check ink cartridge levels on HP Deskjet 4260

You will need the original set up discs that came with the printer. Re-install back on to your computer and there should be a HP program comes with it that will approximate your ink levels.

How do I check levels of ink on my HP Photosmart c6300 all in one. Thank You CJ

There are two ways to do this:
Method 1 Check the back of your computer to make sure that the printer is appropriately connected to the computer and is plugged in. If the printer is not plugged into the computer, find the printer jack on the back of the computer and plug it in before you move on to the next step.Click on the "Start" menu button which is located on bottom left hand corner of your screen. Click on the "Settings" bar and notice that a list of functions pop up to the left of the settings button. Click on the control panel icon.Look for the printer/fax icon in the control panel window. Double click on the printer icon.Find the icon for your printer in the opened window and right click on the icon. Now click on the "Preferences" option.Look for the menu box pop up with tabs near the top of the box. Click on the "Services" tab.Click on "Service this device." You will find the button on the Services menu that you just activated.Click on the estimated ink level tab and a graphic will appear indicating how much ink is left in the cartridge.OR Method 2 Click Start and select HP Solution Center . Select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox .
The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink. Figure 1: Estimated ink levelsc00677193.gif

you will have to use the bi-directional utiliy of the printer (one in the CD) to monitor the ink level and other alerts about your printer.

you can get it here if you d not have the CD anymore.
