Instructions My grandson has given me a new brother printer which he has not used but is unable to find instructions. My computr presently says not compatible - I need to down load an instruction manual - how, please! Shirley

To help you troubleshoot the error 'Unable clean 46', please follow the instructions given below:
- Pull out the AC plug.
- Put back the AC plug while holding down the 'Menu' button and keep holding it (15 sec).
- Now you are entering the 'MAINTENANCE' mode and 'Error 46' pops up in the display.
- Select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK.
- 00:00 00:01 OK (the display is showing this message).
- Now push the 'MONO' button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
- Select 2, push OK, select 7,push OK,select 8,push OK, select 3,push OK.
- The purge counter indicates now: purge: 00000
- Switch OFF the printer and wait for 1 minute and Switch it ON.
- Now try to print.

Well the user guide for this machine (which you should already have) talks all about 'unable to init xx' on pages 139 and 140.

you cant clean
Inside the printer behind the cartridge carrier is an ink absorber. This devise is used to clean the excess ink from the prinheads after printing. THe unable to clean 50 is an indication that the absorber is full and needs to be replaced. It must be changed and cannot just be cleaned. You can order one from Brother and the instructions for replacing it are in the package with the new one. Until this is changed the printer will not operate.

4F is from a defective or shorted printhead, the replacement price is near $100.00 just for the head. I would suggest a new machine with a year warranty, the mfc490 sells for around $120.00 at some places.

Bad news. The laser diode responsible for printing black has up and died. You need a new Laser Unit, part number LR1461001. Brother has released a "Service Update" about this one; the instructions for replacing the laser unit run to nine pages. If you're within the 1-year warranty, it won't cost you, but it won't be printing with it today.

Most likely, you have paper jammed inside the printer in the far left or far right of the printer. It also is possible that the encoder strip may have come off the printhead.

the paper jam you could probably fix yourself by pull out the paper, the encoder will need to be sent it for repair.

Create a new folder on your desktop and name it . Un-intall printer and printer software completely. Go to Brother's website and navigate to their drivers/downloads or support menu. Select your model, choose the relevant software and download to the new folder you created on your desktop. Power down your computer. Reconnect the printer to the computer and turn printer on. Windows will detect new hardware and ask if you have the manufacturers install cd or a location to check for install files. Direct the wizard to your new software, follow the rest of the setup instructions and your done
