Lent my EOS T2i to a friend. When they returned it my 16GB SD card couldn't be formatted and I couldn't access camera functions. Instead I get a message: "The function not available in current mode". Tried switching modes to try to gain functionality. Tried formatting 16GB Canon card in camera. Looked at card on my Mac and it is empty with a capacity of 14MB. Put card in my old Canon Power Shot S2 1S. It works but only has 14MB capacity.

If it is showing only 14MB then I would suggest trying another SD card.
Good luck

Canon EOS 550D won't turn on

If you have Magic Lantern installed on your camera and it won't turn on, all I had to was re-format the SD card. Works perfectly now. You just need to get rid of ML.

When trying to playback photos from SD Card, the message "cannot playback image" is displayed. Happens when using more than one SD card, which rules out that it is the SC card that isn't working.

which rules out that it is the SC card that isn\'t working Not necessarily, switching SD memory card from one camera to another without formatting isn't going to happen. If the SD card was new and not formatted in the camera that it's going to be used in then there could be a lot of different errors occurring. Also if pictures were downloaded from the memory card to the computer and the card not formatted this will cause a problem as well. If you have been deleting the pictures files then again this could be a problem the card needs to be formatted. Another IF is if you downloaded pictures from the computer to the SD card and then put it back in the camera without formatting then it's not going to acknowledge the card. If you formatted the SD card in the computer then it's not going to work or work properly in the camera. Picture files can go from the camera to the computer but not back again because the computer operating system and software is not compatible with the camera firmware. It all comes back to format the memory card in the camera you are using it in before taking pictures.

I bought 2 16gb sdhc cards and cant format them in

you can try to format them on your computer if you have sd drive. Otherwise I would suggest returning those ones and get something different. Sandisk is a good brand.
