Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Where does the light (lamp) in a Kenwood SJ SS 25 microwave go? I ordered a bulb but am unsure of how to put it in when it arrives. The booklet that came with the microwave says "don't do it yourself, call a qualified repairman". Currys (store) said just put in like an oven bulb. Please answer this. Mr. Taylor

I did not fix the problem. I ordered a bulb (lamp) and subsequently saw it is beyond my knowledge to install it. I'll communicate with the store where I bought it 3 months ago and if they won't deal with it, I'll pay a repairman to do it.

see the diagram attached, and fix it. God bless you

  1. Light bulbIf your microwave light bulb is not working, perhaps it has blown. The first step is to replace the bulb and power on the microwave. If this does not correct the issue, the next step is to check the socket and wiring to verify if that is the problem.
  2. Light bulb socket & main control boardIf your microwave light bulb is not working after the installation of a new bulb, check the light socket as well as the wiring to ensure they are properly operating. If these sources are functioning properly, the next step is to check for a faulty control board as a possible root cause to your microwave light bulb malfunction.

How to replace burned out light bulb

You need to remove the top cover to access the bulb. That is the only way on most microwaves.

Microwave light is burnt out

Accessing the internal light bulb on model KBMC140HSS bulb will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download Whirlpool / Kitchenaid owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

These models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

I have a Panasonic microwave oven model # NNL 939 (1000w) that is what is stated on the booklet. My problem is that both oven lights went out and want to know how to replace them.

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Kenwood Microwave 564.8568511 Light Replacement

Ifthere's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner'smanual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

You can usually find Kenmore exploded views and order parts by entering your model number (564.856511) at the Sears parts site.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

Ifit's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top andsee if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottomcovering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances areyou'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. Ifso, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph besides the link to the Sears site.

Thescrews you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a specialdriver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Change a JennAir JMV8208aa Microwave light bulb

Inside light

1. Disconnect power to oven.
2. Remove screws located in front on top of microwave securing grille.
2. Remove grille.
3. Remove screws securing bulb holder.
4. Remove light bulb

Cooktop lights

1. Disconnect power to oven.
2. Remove lamp cover or remove screws securing bottom plate cover.
3. Disconnect lamps.

If your bulb is stuck or physically broken, it can be a pain. It's sometimes tacked in place with hot glue, and sometimes there may have been enough moisture to corrode and seize up.

You could heat it up (hair dryer, maybe?) then use needle nose pliers. Be careful if heating so you don't burn anything.

You may be able to put the tips of needle nose pliers inside the broken bulb's socket, gently but firmly force the pliers jaws apart and then rotate the pliers to loosen it.

Another cool trick is to put a big glob of hot glue on the end of a stick or dowel, then shove it into the broken base and let it cool about 5 minutes, then turn the stick.

I like to put a little WD-40 or rust buster on the threads of the new bulb, too. Grease, Vaseline, cooking oil, or anything like that will work. Just a thin coat.

The lamps are available at most grocery stores, hardware stores, home centers, and places like Wal-Mart and Lowe's.

If the unit uses halogen bulbs, do not handle them with bare hands, as oils from the skin make them run hotter and shorten their lives.

The bulb is not working in my Panasonic NN-A554W inverter slimline combi oven and I do not know the size/number to obtain a replacement. I know you are supposed to get in an engineer but that is a bit...

It's a T170 type bulb (should be very common at a grocery store or hardware store) rated at 240 volt, either 20 or 25 watt is okay, and if you order it as a spare online, it may come with the 90-degree bracket.

You can see a good photo and detailed specifications here.

Bulb replacement

WAIT!!! Before you just take the lamp cover off and try to replace the bulb that way, which would MAKE SENSE!!!, stop! All you'll do is snap the bulb off, leaving the metal screwy end of the bulb in the socket. Believe me - it happened to me. Twice.

The only way to ensure that you'll be able to get the entire bulb out, because the only way you can actually SEE what you're doing, is to remove the bottom cover of the microwave. It's about 6 screws along the underneath surface of the unit. After removing the screws, the front of the cover will hang down and the rear will stay nested in a groove at the back. At this point, you'll be able to see the backs of the light sockets. Remove the two screws on either side of the sockets, and you can gently pull the bulbs out of the housing so you can actually see and work with them.

Chances are, the bulbs have been GLUED into the sockets with silicone, which GE says it does to prevent moisture from getting into the sockets. Right. Then why is it that the replacement lamps work just fine without being glued in?! Anyway - GE actually instructs in the manual to "run a knife around the edge of the socket" to break the silicone seal. Hmmm..Sounds safe to me.

So, after you've eliminated the silicone one way or another, just gently unscrew the lamp like you would any other.

Trust me - you do not want to try to remove the lamps without removing the bottom cover. Oh, yeah - most importantly, unplug the microwave first! Good luck.
