It all depends on the manufacturer's specs. For instance memphis makes a bunch of different 12" subs and each needs a different box. Also It depends on what kind of sound you want. If you want precise bass I would go with a sealed box. If you want loud then I would go with a ported box. Then the port depends on what the manufacturer recommends. what I would do is find their website or just a tech support phone number and get specs from them. If there is one place that can tell you a good box, it is the maker of the subwoofer. If you need help from there just let me know and I would be happy to help.

My legacy 12 inch subs are making a crackling sound what can do?

Hi rodneybarton

The problem of your unit may be its amplifier. You need to open the box and inside of it, there is a component that attached on the heatsink you need to replace that one. or better send your unit to qualified technician.

Box specs and airpsace for 12 inch subwoofers

Regardless of your wattage rating on your sub woofer, sub woofers differ in only one way. You get an "Open Air" and a "Closed air" Sub woofer, That being said, you'll have to check on your magnet which one you have, to make the boxes for that particular sub woofer. If it is an "Open air" Sub woofer, you should see a hole with "wire mesh" or "metal grid" in the center, at the back of the magnet. If it is a "Closed air", the magnet will be solid with no hole whatsoever.

If it is a "Open air" sub, your boxes should always be sealed with silicone sealant, and no ports are to be cut in your box.

Regarding the "Closed air" sub woofers, you should have 2 ports cot in the corners of the boxes just below your sub on the face of the box, and the port sizes should be around 50mm in diameter. Get yourself some 50mm PVC drain piping to use as ports. Firstlycut yourself a 100mm piece and insert flush with the front of the box. Test your sound. then try a 150mm piecs and test again. You should start with a 100mm long piece in the one box and add 50mm increments to "tune" the port up to 250mm, depending on the frequency of bass you require. Carry on testing the sound on each increment until you find the sound you want, Then silicone the port to the box for permanent fixing.

On a 15 inch Sub woofer ranging between 80Hz and 100Hz, the ample box size required should be around 27 liters, meaning that you will end up with a box of 13 inches high, x 13 inches wide, x 13 inches deep. Or 400mm high, x 400mm wide, x 400mm deep.
Enjoy!
What size box should i build fro two pioneer 12inch speakers 1200watts each

For optimal performance there is really only one size for the box .Firstly, you get two different types of subwoofers, an open air, or closed air sub. If it is an open air sub ( hole with mesh in the center of the magnet) no ports are required, and the box should be sealed on the inside with silicone sealant. If it is a closed air sub ( no hole in the magnet) you need a 50mm port about 120mm long. If it is a 12 inch speaker, the box size will be 13 inches x 13 inches x 13 inches.

How big of hole do i need for the mtx 6000 thunder 10in

The MTX Thunder 6000 T61544A is a 15" Subwoofer meaning you will need a 15" hole to fit the subwoofer into. The mounting plate that surrounds the subwoofer will extend past 15" allowing you to screw the sub in properly. Be sure to use a box that is at least 12 inches deep (sub is 10 inches deep by specifications + 2 inches for good air cushion behind.

Need dimensions for 12' 450watt IMPP Subwoolfers for proper air space

Subwoofers differ in only one way. You get an "Open Air" and a "Closed air" subwoofer, That being said, you'll have to check on your magnet which one you have to make the boxes for that sub. If it is an "Open air" Subwoofer, you should see a "wire mesh" or "grid" in the centre, at the back of the magnet. If it is a "Closed air", the magnet will be solid with no hole whatsoever.

If it is a "Open air" sub, your boxes should be sealed with silicone, and no ports are to be cut in your box.

With "Closed air" subs, you should have 2 ports below your sub and the port sizes should be around 50mm in diameter. You should start with a 100mm long piece in the one box and add 50mm increments to "tune" the port up to 200mm, depending on the frequency of bass you require.

On a 12 inch subwoofer ranging between 80Hz and 120Hz, the box size required should be around 27 liters, meaning that you will end up with a box of 16 inches high, x 16 inches wide, x 16 inches deep. Or 320mm high, x 320mm wide, x 320mm deep.
Enjoy!
