Question about Kenmore TRIO® 77553 Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator

1 Answer

H2S (Rotten Egg Smell in Cold Water and Ice)

We have new kenmore refrigerator model #795.7755. It was installed in early April, 2008. Within the last couple of weeks we are getting a rotten egg smell and bad taste in the water and ice from the dispenser. We are on a public water supply from wells. It is plumbed to the cold side of the house water system, of course. All of the rest of the cold water in the house does not have the problem. If we draw cold water from the tap and cool it overnight it does not have the problem.

The Sears tech was just here and does not have a solution. Sears technical support says it is the fault of the water and we must put in a treatment system. I am about to take the thing back to the store.

I believe there is something in the filter or refrigerator water system that is causing a chemical reaction with the sulfur in the water, much like an aluminum or magnesium anode rod in an electric water heater. Sears says that is not the problem and has washed their hands of the problem. The tech was unable to tell me if the ice cube water goes through the filter first, so we cannot narrow it down that way. He disconnected the feed line to the refrigerator and the water he drew was fine. There is apparently no way to bypass the filter either.

Since the last post I have learned the following:
    1. My local dealer contacted several of his sources who all say there is nothing in the filter to cause a reaction. They suggest that there may have been some contamination come through the water system that was trapped in the filter and then caused the reaction. They suggest removing the filter, flushing the system and installing a new filter. It is the best advice and service I have received to date.
    2. I learned it is possible to flush the system (both water and ice) with the filter removed without any leaks. I have done so and it appears the H2S is gone, but will know for sure tomorrow.
    3. Since it is possible to obtain water and ice without the filter cartridge installed one can apparently leave it out if one does not need the filtration. With filters costing over $40 and needing to be replaced 2-4 times a year that is probably what we will do, since our public water system is constantly tested. Will let you all know if it presents any problems.

I have the Kenmore TRIO and have the same problem with the water dispenser. I first noticed an iron taste in the water and when I started trying to run a large volume of water through, I noticed a hydrogen sulfide smell. How do you flush the system with the filter removed?

If you have a braided plastic or braided metal supply line that is your problem. Use a plastic supply line with compression fittings.

Some piece of rotten food stuck in the filter system.
Try replacing the air an water filters.

I have a Kenmore refrigerator model 106.56542400. The ice-maker does not work though the cold water works fine. How much it will cost me? Trying to see if buying a new one is cheaper. Thanks.

The cost depends on where the problem is. For example: If the ice maker is NOT getting water to make ice then it is probably the 2 line water valve solenoid or the sensor on the ice maker that would tell the 2 line water valve solenoid to send water up to the ice maker tray. Both of those replacements will cost you in the neighborhood of $25.00 - $40.00 plus a service call if you aren't able to do the work yourself.

If water is getting to your ice tray, but not kicking out the ice into the bin - that is usually a motor problem. And cost you as much as what a replacement ice maker would cost you.

Kenmore 596.50692001 side by side stopped cooling. The fan is working, the compressor kicks on for less than a minute then kicks out. No cooling air flows. Water dispenser is working fine, but the water...

You most likely have a fried overload, it is the small white square shaped piece on the compressor, to tell if it is bad, remove it and smell it for electric burning smell, or if you shake it and it sounds like sand shaking around it is definately bad. costs around $25 to replace. You can purchas this at http://www.reliableparts.com/ using your model number.

Not putting water into ice maker to make ice

Try pouring 1/2 cup of water into the icemaker and if it dumps ice , then the water valve or fill tube is the problem . If it does not dump , then the icemaker is the problem , or , freezer is not cold enough . Check your coils under the refrig to make sure they are clean and the fan that cools the compressor is working ( and the freezer fan also ) .

Weird smell from refrigerator

Is the smell from inside the refrigerator or on the outside? If outside, it is possible a humid smell from the condensate drainpan water evaporating. You could put a very small amount (a couple of granules) of pool chlorine in the drainpan.

I have a bad smell and taste in water and ice from fridge/freezer

Take out all shelves and accessories that can be removed. Wash these thoroughly with a mild detergent (dish washing liquid and warm water) and rinse thoroughly. Allow them to air dry completely.
* Wipe the inside walls of the refrigerator and freezer down completely with a solution of 1 quart warm water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Wipe the walls completely dry.
* Leave the doors standing wide open. Use a fan to circulate air through the cabinets for several hours to completely dry the inside walls. After several hours, turn the fan off.
* Replace the shelves in the refrigerator. Place shallow trays of one of the following deodorizers on the shelves of the refrigerator and freezer:
o Baking soda
o Activated carbon (used in aquarium filters, can be obtained at a pet store)
o Cat litter
o Fresh and unused coffee grounds (this may leave a coffee smell that would dissipate after several days)
* After 24 hours, plug in the refrigerator and allow it to cool for several hours with the deodorizer still in place. Once cooled to normal operating temperature, remove the trays of deodorizer and put your food back into the refrigerator and freezer.
* Keep some cereal size bowls of a deodorizer in the freezer and refrigerator cabinets for several days
