Question about Audiovox DVD & Blu-Ray Players

13 Answers

We have an audiovox movies2go single dvd system installed in the interior roof of our car. The picture display on the system is not working. You can play a CD in the unit and you can hear it, but not a DVD. You can also see the radio tuning channel numbers for the wireless headphones, but no picture or sound from the DVD. Any suggestions?

The model is a drop down screen unit (MMD85)

  • whtchathink Aug 21, 2008

A question about cleaning the lense. How do you do that exactly? Is it a disc that you use to clean the DVD player? Not sure if we need to take the unit apart to clean it or if we need to use our cleaning disc. Please advise. Any other comments welcomed as well.

    Thanks!

  • whtchathink Aug 21, 2008

It doesn't seem to play the DVD at all. You can't hear any audio from the DVD and the screen is black - no picture. If you put a music CD in, it will play and we can hear it fine.

  • whtchathink Aug 21, 2008

Since this unit is "installed" in our car, checking cables & wiring might be a challenge - where do I start?

  • whtchathink Aug 21, 2008

I do not know what a hand brake wire is - please advise or offer other suggestions.

  • whtchathink Aug 21, 2008

Thanks for the suggestions. What is the best way to check the cables on an installed unit? Where are things connected generally?

  • whtchathink Aug 22, 2008

I am not able to see new comments. How do I fix this?

  • whtchathink Aug 22, 2008

I never accepted a solution from any of the experts and now I am not receiving any additional advice. My tag is incorrect/incomplete. It's a video and audio problem. None of the answers seemed very specific to my problem and when I asked for additional comments from the experts no one has responded. What now? Please change the status of my problem as not solved so that I can receive additional advice. Thank you!

  • whtchathink Aug 25, 2008

To check connections in a DVD unit that is installed in our auto, where would most connections be? The unit is a drop down screen from the interior roof of the car. Do I need to dismantle the unit on the roof or should I look under the dashboard?

Get to the product page here: http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=13880&langId=-1

Click on the "find a manual" link and get the owner's manual and the instalation manual.

The installation manual will show you have to remove the unit from the roof. But I don't think you will have to do that.

Make sure the source selector is on the DVD setting for playing DVDs.

The unit also came with an auxillary AV cable. You could use it to test with an external DVD player or any other video source. Doing this will test the screen, if you get video from the AUX source but not the unit's built in DVD player then there is something wrong with the unit's drive. If you still don't get video from an AUX video source then you know there is something wrong with the screen itself.

You can also press the SETUP button on the remote to bring up the menu, if you don't see the menu then the screen is probably shot.

If you determine that the screen is faulty you have a few options. If it's under warranty contact AudioVox about getting it repaired. You can send it to Audiovox for repairs if it's not under warranty but be prepaired to pay. Your third option is to purchase a new unit.

Also make sure you are putting your movied in the unit's DVD slot drive and not into your car's stereo. The screen has a built in DVD player. I know you are probably already doing that but I just thought I'd make sure.

Your problem is LCD screen because the audio is good. There something wrong to your screen, you better check loose connection or cold solder joint,Unfortunately, the solder connection alone is often used to make both the electronic as well as the mechanical connections. Solder is made up of 60% lead and 40% tin, so it can not be expected to do the mechanical job for long. Designing larger circuit board traces does help to increase the surface area as well as strengthen the pad and the trace leading to it. To minimize stress to the soldered connections, physically heavy components — as well as all frequently used switches and connectors — should first be mechanically secured to the PCB.

Figure 1 has been magnified and enhanced to show four solder pads that have potentially cold joints. Counter-clockwise from lower right, the initial problem isn't so easy to spot, just a slightly "grey" or frosted joint, with each counter-clockwise joint getting progressively worse. This is what ultimately happens when a little pressure is applied over and over again via both mechanical stress and repeated heating and cooling cycles. This would be the case in any studio and especially on the road. Once in this state, the connector could easily be removed from the circuit board with little effort, without soldering. Sometimes the solder connection holds up, but the junction of the PCB trace and the PCB pad will break.

I believe you can find it under the dashboard, so try checking under dashboard if you will be able to find it there, then you could continue the process..

Good luck........

I agree with Abrsvcs about the lens cleaning. it rarely works and there is only one lens in these units. I have been repairing car and home audio for over 18 years and have never seen any DVD player with two lens's.

But your problem is most likely the pick up (part with lens in it) being weak, or on many DVD players that will play a CD but not a DVD it can also be a memory IC.

Both of these options will require a service center to fix it. It is not something that is an easy fix for the end user.

First of all there is only 1 lens on the optics assembly. The lens cleaner disc that you can purchase rarely works. Carefully open up the unit and clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. A DVD requires more laser power than a CD to work properly. It is a common symptom for optics that are starting to fail that CDs will play but DVDs will not. If the celaning with alcohol does not resolve the problem, the optics block will need to be replaced.

You r fundamantal problem is that the digital information is not being read from the DVD itself. This effects both audio and video. Basically what happens is that the disc (either CD or DVD) contains digital informatio (ie. ones and zeros). These are read by the optical block and sent to a D/A converter (Digital to Analog) which is then processed as either video or audio information (picture and sound). If the initial digital stream is not present, no video or audio. As I stated before, the level of laser required for teh reading of a DVD is much higher than for CD. It is common for CDs to play but DVDs to fail when the optics are failing.

Your unit needs to have the optical assembly replaced. No amount of cable changing or adding of ground wires or resets will fix it.

Bottom line: Bring the part that accepts the DVD to a servicer for repair.

Try this if you just ground the hand brake wire by securing a section of exposed wire with one of the main body screws

If you see on the car DVD display that it is playing DVDs and disk is running , but you get no picture on displays, then it is a wiring problem with display, check RCA cables and connections to LCD displays and eventually replace or refit cables.

Try first cleaning lens , as suggested by Jaime, I did not know your unit had separate lens, probably he is right, you can buy a DVD cleaner kit at Circuit city or at any local electronic shop.
To check wirings you will need to take off the unit and check connections at the back, then access connections to display and test cables, it is strange that thy are gone alltogether, probably is the lens.

Thanks for the info tech48 I was starting to get confused on this, I haven't seen any double lens unit either. I think it would be quite a mess to control the two pickups in such a little space, but you never know.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Aug 22, 2008

Yep, pickup with two lens does exist then, by the way this does not make much difference, as a dirty dvd lens can start having difficulties in reading some kind of dvds and read certain others, I assume th can happen also that a unit with dirty or defective lens can end up reading CDs only.

To the user start trying a lens cleaner product, then you will proceed with wiring check on displays and the rest.

Check also your in car DVD display out settings.

I am sure you habe tried different dvd's by now. You do not need to take apart the system to clean get a disc cleaner it is a cd with brushes on it and a cleaner.I believe you have a defective lens usually dirty lens will show bad picture or disc not readable. Also try and loosen the mounting screws just a little.I have seen numerous mobile units quit working cuz they were overtight. It is a no cost thing to try.

  • TripleTauto
    TripleTauto Aug 21, 2008

your unit is an all in one unit so only wires running out of it are the power/ground these are good since you can power up. you can take unit loose and see if a cable has come unplugged but it is unlikely

  • TripleTauto

you do not have a handbrake wire on this unit he is referring to in dash models that by law can only play when park brake is applied

This combo devices have two lenses, one to play CDs and one to play DVDs. It looks like the lens that plays DVDs is defective and will need to be replace.
Try using a lens cleaner. If the lens cleaner does not work, the lens is defective.
If your device is less then a year old, still under manufacturers warranty.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

The lens cleaner looks like a CD, radio shack, best buys should have them. The instructions on how to do it are included with the CD cleaner lens.

I have great sound on my Audiovox portable dvd player but no picture. Can you help?

  • Check that the A/V IN/OUT Switch on the side of the player is set to the OUT position.
  • Check the small switch near the hinge at the back of the unit, if one is installed there. It turns off the LCD screen when the panel is closed. This switch sometimes sticks in the down position and the screen remains off. When the screen is opened, the switch is supposed to pop up. If it is still in the down position, try to free it with the ends of a toothpick or paper clip.
  • If both switches are correctly set and the screen remains blank, the unit should be sent to Audiovox for service.

Hi I just went through the same plight with the Shinco SDP-1750A I won from a local online auction. Sounds fine but no display what so ever. when I went to try and charge the connected battery to a standard 12v auto battery charger I noticed the display would spike with a quick flash as I connect the power. This is of course led me to believe the display wasn't a total goner. Charged it all the way and still zipola.

Seeing that I wasn't real excited about a DVD player that was nothing more than something like an old time radio show I decided to disect the monitor. VERY carefully and gingerly I removed all those tiny knat like screws around the screen frame (put them in a cup or such container so you don't lose what you can barely see). When I removed the dispay I carefully scrutinized all connections nothing looked out of the ordinary or visably at fault.

I then noticed that the main video ribbon interface type connector (wide see thru orange coloured flat cable which connects to bottom center of display was a bit crooked looking. I then unplugged and inspected it then plugged it back in and BINGO the picture was back bright and clear. I then made sure it was held on securely with some electrical tape and now it works a treat.

Hope this helps however this is only one of many things I suppose that can cause lack of display.

Dvd -no picture

Sometimes the displays can't be sent to another tv or monitor. Make sure that isn't turned on. Sometimes there can be a short in the wiring if your unit folds up to play like a notebook computer. You can try moving the screen back and forth and see if the picture changes. If neither of these solutions work, contact audiovox and see if it is cover under warranty.

Portable dvd player will play music cds but not video dvds

Chances are, your DVD player uses one laser to read CDs, and a different laser to read DVDs (since Cds and DVDs are read at different wavelenghts of light). If the DVDs you're trying to watch work properly in other DVD players, it probably means that the DVD laser is dirty, damaged, or burned out. Though you can try cleaning the laser (use Google for suggestions on how to do this, or check the Audiovox website), you will most likely have to get the DVD player repaired, or buy a replacement. Many of the newer CD/DVD players sold today use a single combination laser, which reads both CDs and DVDs, which means that when the laser fails, it will not work at all. Wish I had better news for you, but I guess that the only consolation you have is that your Audivox player still works with CDs...
