There are a couple of possibilities here. First try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. Then try both a music CD and a DVD. If the CD plays but the DVD does not, then it is likely that the optics are starting to fail and need to be replaced. I don't have a parts cost for Sansui players, but call around to determine if the replacement of the optics would be worth it.

Hope this helps,
Dan

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
    Does
the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing
noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the
disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path
inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by
an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

    Totally
silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from
the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a
    better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by
foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a
marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also
be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

    You
could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as
far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover
off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a
very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings
to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust
accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that
guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and
solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser
eye then fails to read the next track. .

Was this working before?? if yes did you try playing another disc and check if it play? if you cannot play any disc with this player there's a possibility that the lens is dirty or bad, you can try to run a CD cleaner to clean the lens..

Hope that helps.........

that can be a problem with the lens , it can be dirty so if you have a
cd cleaner try running that , and check if you can now play a disc,,
but if still not working after running a cleaner the lens can be bad
already, if your player still under warranty replace it..

    Good luck.......

My samsung dvd player will not play dvds, but it

Are you trying to playing recordable DVDs (DVD+R or DVD-R) ? if so, try playing original DVDs (the type you rent or buy) those are pressed DVDs - if it works, then your player does not support DVD-R or DVD+R - If you are using a computer burner that supports bitsetting you can change the booktype of a DVD+R to DVD-ROM to fool your player.

If however your player cannot play either DVD-R, DVD+R nor original DVDs and only plays CDs, then your dvd laser diode is finished - there is one for CD and one for DVD, this is rare but happens, there is nothing you can do, any repairs would be very expensive - you are better off getting a new DVD player they are very inexpensive now and any repairs will cost you multiple times a new DVD player.

DVD+R Wont Play in Mintek DVD 1600 Player

Kay what happens with some players is that they are only bulit to play a certain kind of disc. It also may be because the player is old. If you buy a new player it will be able to play all DVD's that you put in it.

DVD movies have region codes, and they typically only play on a player or DVD-ROM drive sold in the country where the DVD movie was sold.

The actual region code is in one byte on the DVD (digital versatile disc). The DVD player or drive has a region code in its firmware. Personal computer DVD-ROM players often have the code in the software or MPEG-2 decoder. The two codes must match for the player or drive to play the movie. The code is also printed on the back of a DVD package, superimposed on a small image of the globe.

DVD regional locking is used to control which DVD movies play in which countries or groups of countries. Movies are often released on different dates around the world. Region 1 has its own player that will only play Region 1 discs. Likewise, Region 2 players can only play Region 2 discs and not play any of Region 1's discs. The six codes are:
  1. United States and Canada
  2. Europe and Japan
  3. Southeast Asia
  4. Latin America and Australia
  5. Russia, rest of Asia and Africa
  6. China
please check the DVD region code again and what PLAYER u are using to play on PC / LAPTOP??

where did you buy the DVD player??

Check the link below to see how to clean the laser on a DVD player. If cleaning does no work, then the player will need servicing.

Playing recordable dvd

Your player may only be able to play DVD-format discs. Try converting the video with Nero or WinAvi or DVDFlick to true DVD format.
