I have a coby mp-c582 that I bought used for my grandson. I like it fine but am not completely sure of what each button does. The o and x button on the side for instance. What is that one for. I thought it...

You are confused because the buttons have several purposes. The +/- are volume up and down and Next/Previous. If you press and hold the button, you control the volume. Quickly press and release for Next or Previous. The button below them is Pause/Play and Power (again press and hold to power on or off). The switches on the left side are Hold (no buttons work) and Random (play loaded songs in a randomized order)

For the hold feature, move the switch to the padlock. Unlock by sliding the other way. The Random switch has a more obvious label - Random or Normal.

The user's manual for the MP-C582 is available here: http://www.cobyusa.com/files/manuals/MPC582_MN.pdf . If the direct link doesn't work, try the support site: http://www.cobyusa.com/?p=doc and search for the model (MP3 & Portable, MP3&MP4 Players, MPC582.)

I hope this helps.

I can't get the volume loud enough to listen to the songs on the Eclipse mp3 player(2GB). How do I get the volume to work so I can listen to the songs?

The volume button is the one under the center pause/ play (>II) button.
It may be marked VOL.

The manual does not give anymore information than that.

Try using short press or press and hold to change the volume.
This is a common method for using two functions on the one button

The volume on the ipod (4th gen) seems to change on its own. WTF!

the volume may change depending upn the quality of the songs that you may have downloaded...one way to fix that is to go to itunes...edit...preferences...click on playback and check the sound check option...this will adjust the sound levels of all songs automatically...you can even change individual song volumes....right click the song that you want to change in your library...go to get info...options...and there you can adjust the volume of the song or even define preset equalizers for any particular song...hope im of help :)
