Faulty Picture Setting Dial

Hi, The camera is out of warranty and has an annoying fault. Otherwise it is fine and I would like to fix it myself.
The small dial (top right on the rear of the camera) obviously has a fault, is highly touch sensitive, and adjusts the picture settings even if the camera is just shaken.
I have removed the cover and the dial is a pluggable component that could be replaced. I have two questions:
1. Where can I obtain a replacement dial?
2. The connector ribbon appears to be a simple push fit into the connector. Can I just pull it out and push the replacement in, or is there a way to release the connector, like on other similar connectors on items like laptops?
I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Patrick

Hello,

I have the same issue with mine. I usually just leave mine on Auto but half of my pictures end of taken in Portrait which causes image problems.

They sell the dial on E-Bay for about 5.99 shipped. It looks pretty easy but I have not looked at the ribbon cable yet. I would imagine that if you do not see anything plastic like that would pop out (i.e. ribbon cables on many laptops) then it should just pull straight out.

Mode dial icon repeatedly appears on screen despite not touching mode dial

We bought a WB690 earlier this year and had the same problem within a couple of days. We replaced it at the shop and the new one was fine at first, but has recently started doing the same. It's as if the mode dial is working loose, and the slightest touch seems to make the mode graphic appear on the screen (usually just when you are about to take a picture) - very annoying! It's going back to the shop this week, which is a real shame as the camera is otherwise very good, especially the massive zoom.

I've had the camera for about 6 months now. It's been fine until recently. Now it is intemittent whether it wants to take a picture or not. You push the shutter button sometimes and nothing...

It's faulty and new enough to be under the manufacturer's warranty. There is no simple fix for intermittent faults like yours. so just send it back for repair/replacement.

How can I fix a black LCD screen as well as the finder screen. Both show setting icons, but no images when trying to take a picture.

Return to Sony. If it is a faulty CCD then they may fix it free, otherwise there is a fixed charge. Regards, Andrew

Command Dial not working

I have had 2 cameras which developed a fault with the selector dial for exposure compensation & other parameters. Problem was a faulty selector switch on 1st camera. I was lucky to have this repaired under guarantee. Fuji replaced the top end of the camera to fix the fault.

Don't know how much it would cost to get fixed. These cameras are no longer made by Fuji, but I like them for a number of reasons and plan to use them for as long as possible.

Might be cheaper to buy a used replacement on Ebay rather than getting it repaired.

White pictures

Maybe you are shooting in the manual mode (shown as "M" on the dial) with an incorrect exposure setting. Make sure that the dial is in "Auto" mode to check if it will shoot correctly then. If you are still getting the white picture on "Auto", then it may be a defective image sensor in the camera - clearly a warranty claim.

do you guys have a grainy display, that makes it look like there are less color variations?

for example, if you take a picture of something that varies in color from one side of it to the other, with an infinite variation in one color to the next; do the colors separate into grainy spotches, as if it lost some color display capabilities? mine did this, if i took a picture of something that had different hues of one color, they would all flow together into one splotch, and upload fine.

so i sent it in and they said they "reconnected the lens-flex" among other routine things. problem fixed.

but then i sent it in again and they said they did the same thing, but the problem this time around was my capture-mode dial was glitching, the display was FINE. sadly they didn't do jack to fix the dial it and it still screws up. it will switch back and forth from adjacent modes without me turning it.

i'm happy with this camera but its a pain sometimes. if you guys have warranties send your units in ASAP to get it fixed for freeeeeee.

best of luck, i can't suggest anything beyond that.

Command dial is operating mechancally but does not adjust/ change any settings.

If it is still under warranty- your are in luck A repair shop if you can one- will charge about the value of the camera. Bearing this in mind and if you have the nous and suitable fine tools- have a go at looking under the button- you may find slight adjustment to be made. You do this by removing the batteries and removing the fine screws that hold the top plate and /or back cover on. But don't hold your breath.
