Additionally, it will be useful if you tell us your location, usually you can adapt a three prong cords to any situaltion.
Tell us, for example, if you want to adapt a three prong Uk cord to 2 wo prongs European socket etc. so that we can give you appropriate information

    Thanks

I can read only part of your query, I understood you have a 3 prongs Appliance and you need to connect it to a four prongs US socket.
If this is correct you solve the problem by buying an adapter cable like this one here for $25 (click here to open).
Much better than removing and replacing the plug, as yo do not risk shorts from bad plug fitting.
You can also buy a similar product fro a local electricals' shop or from Circuit City, the smaller adapter costs about $10, $25 one is safer.
Let me know if you need more help.

    Thanks.

I have a three prong plug washer/dryer but a 4 prong outlet need an adapter

YOU DONT ADAPT IT, U REPLACE THE RECEPTACLE OR USE THE CORRECT PRONG CORD. THE CORDS ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE FROM 20 TO 30 BUCKS AND EVEN CHEAPER ON LINE. IF U HAVE A NEWER HOME IT IS MANDATED BY LAW THAT YOU USE 4 PRONG CORD NOT 3 PRONG UNLESS THE HOME CAME WITH A 3 PRONG OUTLET.

Frigadare Dryer

Basic Dryer Electrical
Electric dryers in the US operate on two 110 volt A/C circuits. The two 110 volt circuits combine to deliver 220 volts A/C to the dryer heater. 2-dryer-plugs.gifSee the basic dryer heat circuit. The dryer motor operates on 110volts A/C. Dryer receptacles have an L-shaped neutral post. You can check the voltage to your dryer by slightly sliding the cord out of the receptacle and using the leads from a multi meter to check for voltage on the blades of the cord that slide into the receptacle. Between the left and the right blades you should read 220 volts. Between the left or right blade to the center blade (the L-shaped blade) you should read 110 volts AC. The 4-post receptacle above has the L-shaped neutral and a seperate ground. It requires a 4 wire cord and the ground wire is isolated from the neutral on the dryer.
Technicians check for voltage when the dryer is attempting to start or not heating for a very specific reason. Checking for voltage without the dryer plugged in does not tell the full story. A dryer heater uses 220 Volts and draws about 20 amps when it is heating. Checking for voltage from L1 to L 2 on a defective circuit may show 220 volts but when the heater kicks in and starts to draw 20 amps the voltage may drop off to 0 volts. Imagine the wiring to your dryer was stranded wire. Stranded wire is composed of a number of small-gauge wires bundled together to make a larger wire. What if all but one of those stands were cut and only one small wire was completing the circuit? Reading voltage at the receptacle without the dryer plugged in you would read 220 volts from L 1 to L 2. However with the dryer plugged in and the heater attempting to draw a heavy current, the electrons (current flow) would be dammed up behind the cut and only a small amount of current would pass through the wire. Certainly not enough to make the heater heat. There are a lot of things that can cause a partial circuit but the result is the same as the stranded wire example. Many a heater or dryer motor has been changed needlessly because of a loose connection in the fuse box / circuit panel or some other dryer electrical circuit problem.

I have an Electrolux dryer with a four prong cord, and have moved to a house with a three prong receptacle. The dryer appears to have an integrated grounding strap connecting the frame to the center...

Connect the three-prong wire you have the way the same wires (Line 1, Neutral, and Line 2) of the four-prong wires are connected to the terminal block then connect the integrated grounding strap to the Neutral (center) terminal.

I have a new 4 prong plug to replace a old 3 prong on dryer

On a three wire configuration, the ground and the negative are tied together at the center position, using the dryer ground strap. Following is a description of the difference between three and four wire. Hope it helps you.
These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top/left is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom/right.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

Bought used dryer. Plugs don't match. Can cord be switched?

Yes, these cords can easily be switched. When you remove the three prong cord from the terminal block in the rear of the unit, you will wire the four prong in the same way. Black and red go to the outside terminals, white to the middle terminal, and the green wire goes to the cabinet or ground screw on the outside (usually, there is a greenish looking bolt around the terminal block door area for this to go). The only difference in a 3 and 4 prong configuration is the extra ground (green) wire. Good luck and let me know if you need further information.
