Question about MSI Microstar KT6 Delta (MS-6590) Motherboard

1 Answer

Beeps on startup

I am trying to upgrade a computer for my grandsons that has a KT6 Delta board in it. It also has the description MS6590 VER 2 on the board. I have fitted a new 120 Gig hard drive to it, and plan to install XP Home on it.
But when I first power it up I get two short beeps, followed by a pause then another 8 longer beeps.
Can you tell me what this is indicating, and possibly how to fix it.
I also have two DVD-ROM drives and a floppy drive installed.
This machine was working when I got it from my son, but he had an old 20 Gig HD on it, which is too small for what I want to do.
Any help will b e grreatly appreciated.

Thanks for your advice. It certainly gives me somewhere to start looking and trying one thing after another. Looks like a late night, but let's hope it works.

2 Short Beep is POST error then it keeps beeping 8 times to show the video chipset is dead.
Sometimes problems caused by other peripherals, like a short or a misplaced PCI card can give you same error even if video chipset is good.
Try assemblyng motherboard with a minimal set of devices, RAM, CPU, CPU fan, power supply, eventually display adapter if video chipset is not integrated.
If it starts keep connecting other devices (disks, PCI cards etc.) one by one.
If motherboard does not start with minimal set of devices try using a different AGP or PCI display adapter to test the motherboard.
If motherboard starts with different display adapter, then video chipset on board or external display adapter were bad.

Sounds like your O/S was damaged when the old MB failed. I'd boot the computer with yoru system disk and run a scandisk or, in the case of Win Vista or 7, choose the option to repair Windows.

I install bios update for MS-6590 KT6 Delta coz i up grade the RAMs to 3GB but my PC Go to Slowly :( my CPU 2400+ what i can do ?

Typically updating the bios will not make the pc faster, but hopefully make it more stable and support newer memory and CPU´s.
Check the Task manager to se witch programs use CPU power and memory with CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. I find that making sure the harddrive is up to date model, is the most import!
Try using MSINFO32.exe to see what programs starts in the background when the PC starts. A description on how to us the program is here:

Do you have an IDE hard drive fitted as well.
