That sounds correct, the main board is bad (the backlights ON signal is stuck low so it will not turn on the backlights board) and no way the repair shop will have the proper tools to do delicate surface mounted repair works. Mian board is not cheap, I would sell parts on EBAY nad spend the money on new TV.
I have seen less thane two years old TVs that go bad already, they do not make it to last.

Is it worth replacing a broken 32'' samsung lcd screen only 8 months old due to my kid throwing the remote at the screen? or does it cost more than the 500 I paid for it.

It would cost almost as much as this & as the price of Samsung's 32" screen have dropped in price it would be economical to buy a new TV. You could try to make a claim under your home insurance as accidental damage, this might recover some of the cost.

Picture goes off after a while

Call 1-800-Samsung to set up a warranty service call. They will repair it in your home if they send a Samsung Field Engineer. You probably have a bad Main bd.

Complete black screen on samsung 46 inches

Thats Samsung for you. They are designed to last just right outside the warranty then fail. Typically the LCD panels are bad, and they are the most expensive part on that Korean unit.

Ivo on off switch

How old is your TV? If its more than six months old it more than likely has a thermal problem. This results from the fact that all lcd and plazma tvs never entirely power down and after six months or so depending on the model if they are suddenly devoid of power for even one hour they may not turn back on.
The power boards have a tendency to warp slightly after a period of time and after an hour or so with no power they shrink back do to contraction. As stupid as this sounds if your moderately mechanicaly inclined then remove the back cover and stand being careful not to scratch the screen. Get an ordinary hair dryer and without removing th RF shield ( metal cover ) gently heat the power supply till its hot enough to be uncomfortable to the touch. then try the power again. This should work temporarily
and isolate the problem. Good luck.
