Canon PIXMA iP 1600 printing in black

Hello, I am writing on behalf of an elderly friend in England who has the above machine, and uses Windows Vista. He cannot work out how to print documents in black ink only. I am in Spain, and although I have looked and looked on the Internet for a manual I can download to look for the answer, sadly I cannot find a manual. Can you help me please, I need to explain it very simply to him, and at this distance it's hard! Many thanks Ann Colclough

thanks for your help, but I really needed something in idiot speak! My friend has poor eyesight, and I wanted the manual so I could type out the instructions in large print for him to follow,

    Thanks anyway.

thanks SO much for your very kind offer. Unfortunately Gordon is a very proud man and finds help hard to accept. He lets me help him where I can, but he'd be cross to think I had told someone else about his problems. I'm still hoping for a manual I can download and refer to!

Thanks very much though, you're kind.

    Ann

Hello. I'm in Ireland, so it's now international.

the greyscale(black only) settings are in the printer settings, that happen when one opens up a print job. It's page by page, and will stay that way, if it's set as default.

we could arrange a shared screen service call, which I'd do for FREE, if you like let me know. I would be able to work on his computer from here in Germany.

you'll find that in the online help for the printer

My canon PIXMA iP 4000 does'nt write out the colours, only black.

Use the Canon software to check the ink-levels in the COLOUR cartridge. If empty, replace it.

Use the Canon software to run a few "print-head-cleaning" cycles, to unclog any ink-jets that are not spraying ink onto the paper.

Prints but not what you want to print

go to canon us support product menu printers/ip/1600/ downloads and driver. This will give you the software for your printer. I'm assuming your using xp as this is required. If your on windows 7 that os should recognize your ip 1600 and install the drivers itself.

The ip1600 does not have any network connectors, wired or wireless. You need to connect the printer using the USB cable.

Installation

Is where you can download your drivers to install it (after entering your operating system IE Windows XP or Vista). In addition to this you will require an A to B USB Cable (can be found in any computer store). You will also need a standard 2 pin power cord. These are common and are used on many things from stereos to printers. Any printer or computer shop should have some laying around (we have thousands here). Finally you will need to see if there are any ink cartridges in the printer (and if there are whether or not they work). If not then you will need to purchase a Canon PG-40 Black Cartridge and a Canon CL-41 Colour cartridge. This will be your last step though as you won't be able to test your cartridges until it is hooked to your computer.

Good Luck.
Please rate my advice, good or bad.
