No light means inf file most likely missing and currently I don't know exactly how to get that back when it's on a vista machine
or XP machine sinse XP machine will see it just fine even if vista doesn't , but thats not always the rule

the good news is it's not broken and don't give up

soon as I find a fix for it , I'll certanly post it up for you

what I do know is the format usb read/write format tool from the sandisk site can't work in vista if vista can't see the durn thing

so I may get lucky and get it repaird on my XP pro nforce2 machine

let me check that right now

this mess of course requires I log into xp as Administrator
a lovely ordeal you can use tweakUI for it or a manuel registry edit if you have XP pro

I prefure the hot fast and nasty direct registry edit to get the
Administrator account up on the welcome screen , it works
double word value Administrator decimal value 1

I'm very sorry this is such a long post but it's a complex matter
full of confusion you'll deffinately need to set a pass word
for the Administrator account or the sandisk tool will throw a fit

well I've just confirmed that the sandisk usb-test-tool does not work even after I went through all that mess

it claims it can't see the stick or I don't have administrator rights
which we know is a complete lie , thank you sandisk for nothing

I probably just saved you some time

if I find a solution I'll post it , at this point I suspect it's vista's fault like everything else is lol

I need a smoke and I'm very sorry I didn't solve this but it means one step closer to a solution

do not give up. thats the rule in computers , do not give up

Sometimes for virus or trojan horse you may difficulties opening your drives. Your autorun.inf is infected if you find any abnormal language when you right-click on a drive. 1. Goto Start --> Run and type cmd then click OK.
2. If you want to remove the infected file from drive C: then type C: then press Enter.
3. Type "autorun.inf" and press Enter.
4. Type "del autorun.inf" then press Enter. The file is in the drive but not showing or you can't delete it now.

I am unable to delete Rahul'virusprotection.vbe and Autorun.inf in my pen drive .Sometimes deteled again immediatly come to my pendrive

Please follow these steps to Remove Virus using Command Promt:

Click the "Start" menu and type "CMD" into the "Run" box and click "OK."

Select the drive that is infected with the virus. If you are not sure which drive is infected, start with the "C:" drive. Type in "C:" and press "Enter" to access this drive.

Type the following into the command prompt box: - s - h *. * /s /d and press "Enter." This will bring up any suspicious files located on the drive. Open the suspicious file.

Look for a file that contains a ".exe" file and a file titled "autorun.inf." If you find these two files, you have found the tainted file. Make sure to write down the name of the program where the file is located.

Rename the "autorun.inf" so you can access the drive later without activating the virus. Type: rename autorun.inf as virusfile and close out of the "Command" prompt box.

Double-click the "My Computer" icon and select the drive that has the infected file. Find the program that contains the infected file.

Right-click on the program and choose "Open."

Right-click on the file you renamed "virusfile" and choose "Delete."

Right-click on the ".exe" file and choose "Delete." You have now removed the virus from your computer's hard drive.

D drive not open.

If it happens to you that you are not able to open the drives by double click, then your system may be infected with virus. When this virus infects your windows, it automatically creates a autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive. This autorun.inf file is usually hidden, read only and is a system file. This virus also disables folder option. This is not a major problem and can be fixed by deleting autorun.inf file.

  1. Open Start > Run. Now type cmd and press enter. Command prompt window will open.
  2. Type cd/
  3. Type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf
  4. Now type del autorun.inf
  5. Now type d: and press enter for d: drive partition and repeat steps 3 and 4.
  6. Repeat step 5 for all your hard disk drives.
  7. Restart your computer.

How to remove write protect on my usb flash drive

Maybe you are infected with a virus. Run CMD on rrun command or get to run the Windows Dos Prompt. Goto flash drive drive letter. Then type DIR/AH, this will show you list of hidden files in your flash drive usually if you get an autorun.inf you are infected with a virus. Type TYPE AUTORUN.INF with the space in between. This will show you the script if it will run an exe command usually untrusted one. Usually the autorun.inf and the linked exe is attributed to be hidden, system, and read only.

If the files in your flash drive is not so important you can try to delete the autorun.inf only. But you will gonna do this first. In its drive letter type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INF hit enter. Then type DEL AUTORUN.INF. trying to access the flash drive in windows screen you can get that something is cannot be found. But you could actually delete and load files into it. Or try to access the drive rightclicking it then select EXPLORE.

Hope this help. Post comments if this does not help.

Problem with windows xp

Sometimes it happens in windows XP that you are not able to open drives on your hard disk. When you double click on the drives icons or right click on the drive>>explore in My computer ,the drive does not open.

This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives.

But don’t worry this is not a big trouble it can be fixed easily.

Fix:

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive.

Very simple . virus create some bad registry if you want to solve this problem then delet this registry

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2

delete all drive from here
