If it had no problems a week ago, and the USB worked, then you can use System Restore to roll back to a week ago.
Depending on how long you've had this problem, System Restore may not have kept backups from that long ago.
If your computer is really in a bad way, backup all your important files (double, then triple check that you have everything) then use the recovery/installation disc that came with your PC to wipe and reload the entire system.
This gives you a fresh start and gets rid of a lot of junk. Failing that, you need much more detailed help to fix existing problems to get your box up and going properly. =-]
