Question about Computers & Internet

Screen i cant see my screen its went blank as if the bcklight has failed is there anyway to reolve this I have an HP ZE2113us that I purchased from my god-daughter (helping out a broke college student!) The hard drive had crashed but I easily replaced it and added additional ram and used the laptop for a good year before I lost the display the other day. I had never had a problem with the display before, but I think i may actually have contributed to the issue by partially closing the lid with something blocking it open. i planned to go back to continue working but became sidetracked and didn't get to it until the next day (today). When I restarted it, I could faintly make out the start up sequence and was able to see just enough to login, but it was futile to try to work with it. I tried to adjust the contrast, but that didn't work, so I hooked it up to an external monitor to test and I could see everything perfectly. I have read several comments/suggestions which refer to the power inverter and/or LCD backlight lamp. I am pretty computer literate and knnow how to build and repair PC's so I can understand the situation regarding the lamp burning out, but could someone supply an explanantion of the power inverter's function? It would probably help me determine whether it is the lamp or the inverter itself. Any assistance would be welcome. Thanx!

Hi,

To give you an idea:

  • the backlight are CCF lamps (cold cathode florescent). Due to size/ design, they are roughly 2mm in diameter and length spans the width of the display area, they are often shielded/supported by a similar length J bar/bracket both for reflective purpose and structural support. If on the instance the lid was closed with an object obstructing, then it is very possible that the lamp was broken. This could be visually verified once the display panel is exposed;
  • the inverter is basically a DC to AC converter. It takes in the supply DCV of the laptop and converts this DCV to high frequency high voltage supply to power the CCF lamps. Often the inverter is an elongated PCB with a HF transformer at one end that immediately goes to the CCF lamps through a 2wire connector. The inverter could be electrically checked with the use of an ACV meter.
  • Both are readily available online.
  • It is often more of a challenge opening the two halves of the lid than determining the fault;
  • In some instances, dried up/blistered capacitors can cause no oscillation (hence no HF/HV output);
  • there are also instances where it is the flat cable that might have been stretched and therefore power is not available to the inverter;
  • since the inverter's output is HF/HV, pls treat it like the flyback of a small TV.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Display screen is blank??

After eight years of service, it is possible that the display has failed. You will have to weigh the cost of replacing the display against the probable maximum lifetime of another two years for the machine.

try plugging in another screen using the VGA slot at the back (or side) if this works then there will be a hardware issue with it and it would need to be sent away for repair with HP unfortunatly

Hi,

Try removing your battery for about 5 mins and place it back. This time it should start properly.

My screen went black

If your Notebook's screen went blank you can do the following:--

1) Try booting with an external monitor. Connect the external monitor to the VGA port given to the Notebook.
Result:1 --- If the external monitor is working fine, then the problem is with LCD. If your Notebook is under warranty you can get it repaired free of cost.
If your Notebook is out of warranty you can go to HP.com and purchase the LCD screen (If you are in USA please go to this link :--- http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/)

Result 2:--- After connecting the external monitor even the display is not there, then it is the problem with the motherboard. If your Notebook is under warranty then you can avail free repair.
If your Notebook is out of warranty you can go to HP.com and purchase the Motherboard (If you are in USA please go to this link :--- http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/)

Screen

Try pressing Fn-F4 a couple times. Sometimes people accidentally enable the external screen and disable the internal one. If this doesn't work, try plugging an external screen in. If the external works then you might have a dead display.

Can you try booting to an external screen? If it works with an external screen, sounds like either the inverter (probable) or the backlight has gone out. If there's no image on the external screen, it could be any of several things, the most likely of which is the video module.
Sounds like you got a lemon. The DV series have been good sellers, and mostly good units.
Good luck
