I lost the disc with the software and can't transfer ANYTHING to the MP3 player... can I download the software?

Try looking here http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/global , and you should be able to find the software and drivers for your player. It's a free download, and I believe the Emodio software is the current download for your player. Good Luck!

I can download music from computer ok but not pictures

There is not a Vista-compatible driver or software - you can read the Vista warning by going to www.usasupport.philips.com - this particular mp3 player (HDD series) is completely obsolete.
