Question about Westell Wirespeed LiteLine 6100 (B9961001002) Modem

Westell 6100, to smart for job!

Hey Randy,

First time asking for help from you, liked what I saw. I just got a Westell 6100 to replace my 6110 that crapped out. Problem is I just need a dumb modem, not a smart modem with firewall, power windows, door locks, and keyless entry. I just need something to connect to the internet. I have Linksys 160N I use for firewall.

The issue is that I can't get people into my servers now that we have this damn thing. I've bridged the modem, turned off the DHCP and then get no internet, I know I'm missing something, but what? Is it possible to get this 6100 to work just like the 6110?

Thanks,
Wolf

You have to activate DHCP in order to make the westell a modem "dummy" (it will just act as a bridge to the internet from your Linksys.
on the modem, go to a setting that is similar to "Public Routed Subinterface". dont choose anything that says "proxy" or "NAT".

find out the Linksys's IP adress by looking at the devices or computers list on the Modem's home page.

Now, put that IP adress on the setting "Public Routed Subinterface" (or similar). If it has a "Subnet Mask" option, type in "255.255.255.0". Also, If it has a "open firewall" or "bypass firewall" option, enable it.
If it does not have a firewall option, disable the firewall on the MODEM, not the linksys. This is also called DMZPlus mode.

If the above does not work, go here on the entire instrucitons for setting up the linksys with your modem.

I want to use the modem on my pc but at the same time what to join the xbox live

Either you get a router to allow your pc and xbox to get online at the same time.
OR,
You may contact your Internet Service Provider and ask them if they can replace your Westell Wirespeed with a Westell Versalink (modem/router-in-one). Mostly, ISPs will inform you if it is cheaper to buy a router from them or replace the modem.

Lost my internet service

I can't really tell by the picture of the modem of what version you have an f series or g, but I can tell you this for personal experience that the westell 6100 F series is junk. I went with westell 6100 G and my works pefectly. Verizon admitts at www.dslreports.com they have trouble with the 6100 F modem. What verizon said the new firmware was to blame on the 6100 F.
I would like to add that my friend had the exact some problem, he got he G series, and it cure his.

Ps3 key change timeout using westell 6100 modem on verizon

there might be a problem with the Linksys router, the Westell 6100 should be 1st set to bridge mode in order for your router to be connected to it. or there could also be a proble on the Verizon server.

Connecting another computer

HI,

Im not sure what model of westell you are using but if you say that it has a USB port then it must be a westell 6100. With this type of modem { 3 ports } w/c are USB port , ethernet port and a phone port. Connecting another computer is technically a no-no for that device. It will create a conflict and the other computer wont work at all vice-versa. Youd experience slow connection too.

I would recommend you to just use 1 PC for this device OR you would consider on purchasing a router for that.A router is a separate device where-in you can connect multiple computers. modem --> router ----> computers { wired and wireless}. Routers are more secured and is very efficient when it comes to home networks.

Hope that helps and if you may have additional questions pls feel free to post it in FIxya.

Good Luck .

USB Connection

Hi floinmist .

Westell 6100 modem by default can only be used for 1 PC . It cannot orit is not enabled to use for 2or morer computers as it creates a conflict within. Ethernet connection is the BEST connection for you to use.> your USB is sent to you by you provider { ISP} or by westell packages. Its is only a spare cable just in case your PC doesnt support ethernet connection ,  nothing else.

To resolve this issue you might want to upgrade your modem to a router w/c is westell versalink . You can connect 2 or more computers  { wired or wireless connection } and is more stable compared to your westell 6100.

Connecting 2 computers could cause slow, intermittent and NO connections at all problems.

IF you have other questions pls feel free to ask and let me know if theres anything ii can assist you with .

Best wishes.

Prince
