Hello:
Quite some time ago, I was given a 53UWX10B, and told that it had
"convergence problems". I verified that it did (I don't remember a
brightness issue at the time), and replaced both of the STK 392-110 ICs
on the convergence bd., but the screen is too dark to read the menus to
set convergence! I can receive various channels, hear audio, and see
just enough to know that the tuner and everything else seem to be
working. I have the service and operator manuals, and I'm pretty
certain that all of the various voltage indicator LEDs are lit. I
tried to manually increase the brightness via the menu, but for some
reason am not able to (I *think* it is currently set at 60%). I read
the service manual instructions & looked at the illustrations, but
every time I try to increase brightness, the menu disappears. I just
can't see well enough to know if I am selecting the proper icons or
not. The only way that I can just *barely* read the words on the menu
(yellow lettering on black background?) is with the TV in a completely
darkened room.
The only other thing of note is that I noticed that a multi-wire cable
(PDS1) from the "Sensor P.W.B." was incorrectly plugged into a
connector on the front of the Digital Convergence Unit on the
convergence bd., instead of on the convergence bd. itself. It doesn't seem to matter if this cable is plugged into the wrong socket, the correct one, or left disconnected.
Can someone please help? I have the service & operator manuals, a
DVM, and one semester of DeVry Institute of Technology education on TV
repair, circa 1979(!). There isn't a listing of my problem in the
trouble-shooting section of the service manual. At the very least, I
can follow advice. Thanks in advance!
I didn't understand what you were trying to tell me in your first sentence. My screen was dark ALL the time. I did a word search of my service manual for "zd-309", and could not find a zener or any other diode with that number. However, I did turn up the upper three adj. pots (R, G, B screen adj. VR) on the small black plastic assembly facing the front of the TV (behind the front panel). This assembly also has three adj. pots for R, G, B focus. The whole assembly is shown as a "FOCUS PACK (UFPK)" on page 62 of the service manual. I now have plenty of screen brightness.

Good Day, Cary;
PICTURE IS DARK WHEN OSD CONTRAST MENU ADJUST LEVEL CHANGES. Cause: SHORTED ZD-309.
Also, increase Screen controls at front of TV and see what pix brightness does . Hopefully you did check brighteness & contast levels. When adjusting Sreen controls set contrast control at about 90% and brightness at about 50%.
Good Luck, big IRISH.
If the picture is dark when OSD, conrtast menu level are changed, suspect defective diode ZD-309. Try to increase the screen controls , on front of TV, so you can observe the menu.

Convergence on ur tv are dead.Must know how to do soldering?Must replaced 2 STK convergence ICS,and some or all it resistors.Tries websites Tv repair World.com,Tvrepairkits.com to buy a convergence kit to fix it urself. The shop will cost u $300 for parts and labors.
Had the same problem with so I purchased a repair Kit from www.TvRepairKits.com. The kit had all the parts and simple step by step pics of the repair. I cant thank them enough for making this possible . At first the repair did not work so I emailed them and within an hour they told me to check two other items. Sure enough they were right! The set is now working perfectly. Try them Louis
Welcome to the world of having a convergence circuit problem. There two things you can do; get it repaired by a Factory Authorized Service Center or repair it your self. Purchase KIT 10 from B&D Enterprises, 1-800-458-6053. The kit has everything you will need except soldering equipment and experience. Good Luck, big IRISH.
Good Day, Butchilee,
Sounds like you have patience, hope your TV has some trace left. Hit recommends that you replace the originals with
STK-392-150's and the resistors. Replace said items with care then back down on the screen/ focus controls and gradually bring the screens up until you have pic, adjust focus. Go into customer menu and adjust color down, set brightness to 50%, contrast to 100%. Then go back and adjust the screens for proper, black/white, tracking. AND It's best to double check the soldering connections.
Good Luck, Big Irish.
This is a problem with the convergence circuit. If you can solder, try resoldering the pins on the convergence ICs. If that fails to resolve the problem, replace the ICs. These ICs are large and black, attached to a heat sink and are marked STKxxx.

Hi, first what exactly are you looking for? the convergence board of the STKs number? If you have convergence problem, you will need to change the STKs for sure and check the resistence to the STKs and generally all of them have same low value. check it out and replace the faulty onces. switch on and adjust convergence and you have a good working picture on the screen.
