Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 13, 2011

10 months ago I had my 6 year old Dometic A/C replaced by a friend who bought the new unit directly from Dometic via a Dometic employee. It worked fine the two times I use it this past winter while traveling in So. Cal. Last week I "exercised" the genny and turned on the A/C to put a load on the genny. The A/C fan and compressor came on, but no cool air came out of the genny. I took it back to the person who installed it and he said it had lost it refrigerant and could not do anything about it. Why can't I simply add more?

10 months ago? Do have any warranty on this?
As far as adding refrigerant. Yes - you can add some - but you need to fix the leak first, since it will be quite expensive to keep putting refrigerant in. I would first try to get the mfc repair it and if that fails I would call a serviceperson.
note: fixing a leak and re-charging the system is going to take someone 'very' knowledgable of air conditioners.
good luck!

How to repair my Samsung TV? When the TV is turned on it powers on and off non stop until unplugged.

Hi, the motherboard could have been affected. Since you have ever replaced the power supply, its better you get a new motherboard.

Electrical problems

Are these factory OEM replacements? I once put three cheap aftermarket Kragen batteries in my Corvette in 6 months, bought a Delco and problem solved, that was years ago. Sounds like your problem is that the car sits to much, if it sits more a few weeks either hook up a float battery charger or disconnect the negative cable to the batt.

Timing belt

I call B.S! A 6 mo old belt won't look old and cracked like a 5 or 10 year old belt. Sure they can't exactly tell that it's new (6 mo is not) but they can tell that it is not worn! My mother in law used to get lied to by mechanics all the time. I would replace her brakes and two months later a mechanic would tell her she needed new brakes and that it was dangerous to continue driving. I would get so mad that they would con her like that.

Allways ask for your old parts back from the shop!

How do you get up to date maps for navman my55T

Start at the navman website.

I should pre-warn you that they are not very friendly. About 4 years ago I bought my mom a Navman ICN 620, after 6 months I tried to get updates and called and emailed them for about four months finally when they responded they just said they were not updating US maps for any of their previous products. Looks like they are more an international company that sells in limited quantity in the US through Radio Shack stores. I have gone back to their website about 5 times since then to see if any updates were ever added and they never did.

If its an older unit I would replace it Tomtom makes a nice unit and Magellan even has a few units with free traffic updates (depending on area)

I finally just replaced the unit for her this christmas bought her a Magellan roadmate 1470 for $150.

Just FYI most GPS manufacturers want you to pay YEARLY for their map updates and if you skip an update you may have to also pay to do a firmware update. I have a Tomtom go 720 which is 2 years old they wanted $49 for a firmware update and $99 for the map update.

Problem w/ dometic penguin a/c. upgrade kit?

You know what, I have never ran into that yet in 15 years, so I think your best bet would be to go to, (dometicusa.com) and send then a quick inquiry to confirm, what would be required, they are usually pretty helpful believe it or not.

My RV rooftop air conditioner fan has seized up

Whether to replace the entire unit or repair it is a tough decision. If the unit is not very old and was working fine before the fan motor froze up, then I do not think that it is necessary for the entire unit to be replaced. With a new unit of course comes the new warranty.

It is not difficult at all to replace the upper unit of the air conditioner. What you have to look for and make sure of is that the ceiling pack or Air Distribution Box (inside unit of AC) that you currently have is compatible with the new Upper Units. Get the part number off of the inner unit and make sure that it is compatible with the part number of the new upper.

Again, it is much less expensive to replace the fan motor than the entire unit (especially Dometic). You could replace the fan motor and get another 10 years out of the AC or, you could replace it and only get 1 year out of it. That is your call.

Just a word of precaution. Dometic Air Conditioners are very hard to find right now due to an industrial accident that occurred at the AC plant. Most distributors and service centers are 6 to 8 weeks out on getting a Dometic AC in stock. That is something else to think about.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
