Problem install RH9 at Proliant 1600

By Bomber - usenet poster

" "
Try to install RH 9 at Compaq Proliant 1600 Server, with 128MB RAM, 500MHz
CPU, 9GB SCSI HDD.  An "unknown monitor" probing error occur even the
install mode is
graphic mode or
text mode or
using "linux skipddc text noprobe".

I had try to use HP, IBM G52 and E54 monitor, but get the same result.  Did
anybody knows how to install RH 9 at Proliant 1600 with trouble free?

I solve it.
I think it is due to the USB chip of the Proliant 1600, actually it don't
have USB port.  It can solve by using "linux nousb" to install.  After
probing the monitor, it probe my PS2 2 button mouse to a wheel mouse.  I
think it cannot reconize the correct mouse if USB chip exist.  I can also
use the GUI to install.

BTW, HP technical support only said that  "The behavior you are facing is
due to Proliant 1600 does not support Red Hat 9 and is not certified for the
same.", they don't know the problem is due to the non-existing USB port.

I think the main problem is the Proliant's video card, which is not
supported by the RH9 install media, but I could be wrong.

Try the text mode install, choose "Custom Install" and de-select all
XFree86 packages (and all other graphical stuff). This should get you a
basic installation which you can use on the console. Depending on how you
intend to use the box you may choose to download and install the official
XFree86 from www.xfree86.org and try to massage it gently to work with the
onboard graphics controller. Of course you don't need to do any of this if
you intend to work headless, ie. w/o monitor.
