Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I just upgraded my linksys 54g to the Dlink DIR-655. I have a dell desktop running vista, and a MacBook Pro. I spent two hours on the phone with Dlink help desk, the level 2 person finally said he thought i had a bad router, so i hung up. Before i unplugged it from my desktop, i turned on my MacBook, plugged it to the router, and it set up in 5 min and ran wireless fine. When i am plugged in to the desktop, i go to Explorer and try to pull up the Dlink router IP and it is like nothing is even connected. What should i do?

Its because you have to set the desktop up from the macbook while the desktop is pluged in to the router , from the macbook see if you can bring up the ip from there . these linksys routers are kind of dificult to work with i have one my self

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Cannot get Amazon "Kindle" Wi-Fi reading DEVICE,

I had similar issues with a WRT54G, sporadic problems getting certain devices to connect. I ended up replacing the Linksys with a Dlink DIR 655. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason which would work and which would not. Most did, but a few would not.

You can try:

Turn of all security (TEMPORARILY) in the router and see if you can connect with the WPA (or whatever you use) turned off (TEMPORARILY). This is one the problems I ran into. Was able to connect with no security, but not with security enabled. No idea why, units would just not sync. This occurred with a Dell 620 laptop. I do not have a solution for this. One of the reasons I upgraded. I did check that the Dell had all the latest software/drviers. Does kindle have software/bios updates (I do not own one so I am not sure)?

You can try connecting the Kindle to a different wireless network to eliminate the Kindle as the source of the problem.

Try upgrading the BIOS in the Linksys to the latest if it is not already.

Just FYI - Even on my DIR-655, which has been a workhorse - no issues connecting any devices and much faster than the Linksys, I occasionally still have to reset the power to "clear it".

I need updates for dir 655 for windows 7

The only real update is a firmware upgrade. I'm having constant disconnect problems and the firmware upgrade only made it worse. Either wait for a better fix from D-Link or return for a different router. Updates and other information can be found here at D-Link's support page http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-655&tab=3

Good luck!

Cannot connect to DLink DIR-655

The part below is all you need to look at, the rest is Ethernet which is your wired connection, ethernet card.

Here is what are causing your problems from what you gave me and basically your computer is not communicating with the router:

1)I don't see any IP address for your laptop so you can't get on the internet if you don't have an IP address, also, I don't see any gateway address. The gateway address is your router address, and that address is given to the router automatically from your Internet Service Provider.

So if your computer cannot see the gateway address then the gateway address (router) cannot give you an IP address to get on the Internet.
Your Wireless card looks ok, that is the physical address and if you were able to do the loopback then its working.

So on your laptop I would begin from the beginning. Go into network connections and delete the DLink connection if it is there. Then Start>control panel>Network connections>click wireless network connection>click change settings of the connection on the left window>click wireless network tab>make sure checkmark"use windows to configure my wireless network settings>click add a new network>TYPE IN THE SSID FOR THE NETWORK>ENTER WEP/WPA KEY>CLICK OK, then close and you should be connected.

You said other computers are able to access the internet thru the DLINK so it all points to your laptop not being configured correctly.

HOWEVER :)...I see alot of "Media disconnected in your list. Make sure all of the lights are working on the front of the router, if not check the cabling or call the ISP sometimes the problem is on their end. Hope this helps, keep me updated.
