Don´t use front USB hub from computer.
Try rear USB ports.
If you are using laptop, try on diferent computer.

I had this problem - if you tried a different cable and usb port and still have this error try this.
Step 1. close out itunes and disconnect your phone
Step 2. turn your phone completely off
Step 3. relaunch itunes
Step 4. plug in the usb end into your computer, but do not connect your iphone yet
Step 5: This is the somewhat tricky part....hold down the round circle home button while you plug in your iphone.
This is suppose to bypass any software currently on the phone that is corrupt and do a true fresh install. Of course you probably already know that all information will be lost from your phone - so hopefully you backed up before the crash.

The problem is in cable, i am sure.
there are many inductions arround and cable doesnt work propertly.
I try this many times and i make circles from kable and put iphone so much near to computer that cable works.
So, there are both ways to solve it.
1 - better cable
2 - make circle from kabel
Sorry for my english, hope everybody understand

I moved from using front usb's to rear to fix the 2003 error. I think the iphone needs to utilize optimum power via the cable & the rear usb's use 75% of the given power to a pc whereas the front usb's use 25% of the given power. I hope that helps :)

I just had this problem and it turned out to be... It didn't like my iPod cable. Switched to the iPhone cable and it worked.
Seems to be an iPhone 2.0 prob, or 3g prob, since I was using the iPod cable to sync my old iPhone just fine.
