Problem for Canon CanoScan D660U Flatbed Scanner

?-( Canon D660U film scanning capabilities?

Just wondering about the capabilities of the CanoScan D660U. Mostly to scan film
for web usage. Any problems, major issues, etc.

Cheers.

Same Problem

Feb 08, 2009

-   I can't get the film scanner to work on my CanoScan D 660U--I just updated to the latest driver for Windows XP. I keep getting an error message that either the original is in the wrong place (it isn't), the white protective sheet is still in place (NOT--I removed it). or the lamp isn't yet warmed up (been on for half an hour!), so it refuses to scan. Anyone know what to do? Thanks for your advice!! -   sharon74464

The scanner does an excellent job with prints. Canon updated the driver
files on its web site recently, and now only passable slide and negative
scans are quite good.

It is slow compared to an Astra 600S SCSI-based unit for high-res scans,
though.

On the other hand it is quite speedy when prints are scanned at 72-100 DPI,
as they would be for web pics.

Remember though that scanners in this price range can't equal dedicated
film-only scanners.

For a small image scanned from a negative, see the photo of the Canadian
Armed Forces Labrador rescue helicopter posted at:

This scan was made using the original drivers. Film and slide scans seem to
be better when the latest downloadable drivers are used.

I would be interested in whether readers of this newsgroup think the scan
quality is passable or not.

I am very impressed with the quality of the scans I get from 35mm slides and
film, I only wish it was a bit quicker.  I have just scanned a slide and the
total time for initialisation, preview and final scan was 2.5 minutes :-(

The only other (small) problem is remembering to remove the protective sheet
from the lid, otherwise it takes even longer!
