It's the power connector on the motherboard, and the more you wiggle the connector on the cord to make contact, the more you damage the motherboard (from the sparks and heat).

There are a number of sites on the web that offer to fix that problem (it's probably the worst part of the design of any laptop) for prices ranging from around $75 to $200 - try this search to find someone you feel is competent:

If there's no power getting from the power jack to the motherboard, nothing will work. But if there's power and the bluetooth doesn't come on, you have two problems. (An external bluetooth dongle is about $10, and fixing the switch woiuld probably cost a few times that, so it wouldn't pay to fix it.)

Sounds like the battery, had similar problems.. if you purchase a new battery make sure you get the right kind there are two types, an 8 cell or 12 cell..

The fix for my pressario involved completely stripping it and soldering 3 pins on the power connector on the mainboard.. not difficult but no mean feat.. now works perfectly (with the inclusion of a 12cell battery)

HP pavilion will not shut down

pull the power cord out and the battery (or just let it run out). Then, try turning it back on again. If it does the same thing again then yes it may be old blue death and your harddrive may be worse than dead. I don't believe that the power button doesn't work. Hold it in for 10-15 seconds or so, any computer is DOS programmed to respond to the power commands above all, even above the dreaded blue screens. Let me know if I'm an ******* and I don't know what I'm talking about or if you need more help.
